Anyone know of a better alternative to a 98 cobra tensioner? I'm using one on my 99 gt and I think I want to try and upgrade to reduce belt slip as much as possible without swapping to an 8 rib conversion
American racing solutions tensioner's are fantastic!! I had problems with my 04 Mach 1 and 03 Cobra breaking belts and tensioner's, I have a thumper tensioner if your interested, it will definitely fix your issue, but American Racing solutions tensioner's are far better ! Look them up and speak with the owner Frank , great guy and helpful!!! Good luck Dean

What's your pulley combo? There's a point where no matter how tight you make the belt you're going to have slip. And a tight belt tears up main bearings.
if I continue to have issues I'll have to give them a call and look into it. I will never give Thump another dime by any means
Wow, ARS tensioner looks like a piece of art!! Beautiful. But, for that price I’d rather have a little belt slip. You get what you pay for, I understand.
I use a 05+ Roush tensioner on my 04 Cobra. Not 100% but I believe it will work for you. I had to shim it with a few washers. Also, Steeda makes one at about the same price point.
ROUSH Mustang Belt Tensioner, Heavy Duty 4.6L 3V (2005-2010)
might work for you....?
Yeah, you're right on the edge of that. IIRC 3" was the size it was time to move to an 8 rib. There just isn't enough surface area for belt contact. I ran a 3.4" on a D1 and no matter what I did it would slip. Including having a belt so tight it took two people to put it on. It tore up the front main bearing too.I have a 3.2 pulley with minimal belt slip but I’m cranking up the boost soon so I just wanna be safe

My final set up was an F1A with a 12% crank pulley and 3.9 blower pulley, 8 rib swap, and a Thump tensioner. Never had slip and it didn't kill the main bearing.
Swapping to the 8 rib now will save you many headaches down the road.
