Does it matter where you got your degree ?

My daughter is looking at a few universities to continue her education as well as run cross country and track. They are Division II schools, but a couple of them are really nice and we still have more to go look at.
She has outstanding grades and could get into the University of Oklahoma on grades alone, however, she would probably not run for them. She could possibly walk on at OU but she is being offered athletic scholarships at Division II schools so we're looking primarily at Division II universities.
In your opinion does it matter where a college degree comes from?

Depends on what she's majoring in too. It absolutely might depend given the major and where she's looking for work.

If its basket weaving or sociology, I dont think its going to make any difference, lol.

Coming from someone in nursing if you have your bachelor's it doesn't matter where you have your degree from. All we care about is bachelor's degree and then experience after that.

I've always wondered that too. I'm in a manager role and when hiring I just like seeing they went to college and got a degree, doesn't matter the university. I went to a smaller college (Stephen F Austin in Nacogdoches) only because it was close to home and not 40k a year.
I do think that what her goal in life work wise is might come into play. You might get bonus points when interviewing if you have a nursing degree from the University of Texas vs. the University of Texas at Dallas.

Unless it’s Ivy League, for the most part it doesn’t matter. You might get some bonus points for school choice depending on the particular field you are going into but usually that’s only if you are living in that regional area.

As someone who hires engineers.....

I could care less about where you get your degree from as long as it is accredited. The fact you have the degree gets you the interview with me (for new grads....if they have experience, we look at that to determine if I want to talk to them).

I have hired quite a few engineers from small schools like (you'll love this @NoSlowGT ) Stephen F Austin and Lamar University.

When a work sector is understaffed, such as nursing and engineering, you'll find the whole alumni preference stuff doesn't really apply.

My uncle who is in charge of the phone systems worldwide for PayPal also goes after experience and/or certificates over a degree. Just about everyone he has hired with a degree has been an entitled flop of a hire.

Priorities are location/feeling if she likes the school and how they sell their nursing program.

Ride the ports scholarship for as long as she can. A scholarship to a terrible nursing program hurts in the long run. Partial scholarship to a good nursing program would be better. Or there is no scholarship to the school she loves.

The more she can experience in college from the nursing program the better off she will be getting jobs. Look at what machines/procedures/techniques etc that the field of nursing relies on and see if said schools teach that. In reality it may only take one broken ankle to lose a scholarship so better have a backup plan.

End goal is a good paying job with least amount of bills...up to your family to decide risk vs reward.

As a software engineer, one of the best ones I've worked with only had a GED to his name at the time, and one of the worst ones had a Master's Degree.

Though to be fair one of the other best ones had a PhD.

Oh, and the "GED guy" went on to work as a Senior Engineer at Netflix, but now has his own company. "Master's Degree guy" works as a roaming consultant--blech.

I'll go against the grain here and say that most universities are a gigantic ripoff. They tell all these impressionable kids that they need to spend the most amount of money going to the best of the best school, or else they are doomed to be burger flippers their whole life. Kids end up with practically useless degrees that collect dust while they spend the next 20 years paying off tens of thousands of dollars of student debt.

I get that most fields require degrees and some of them really do matter which school you went to, but I vote to go with scholarships or whatever is the best program/school for the money rather than chasing the "better name brand" schools.

Sorry for the rant, just makes me sick these colleges preying on 18 year olds forcing them to make life changing financial decisions when they have no clue what they are getting into.

I've done plenty of hiring in the engineering field. As long as the candidate has a degree, that works for me. Yes, seeing an "impressive" school is nice, but doesn't influence my choice. I'm more concerned with the actual person and personality and projects/experience.

My nephew graduated from SFA a year or so back. He really liked the school.

For most things no. For some yes. Take for instance my BIL who has his PhD in biomolecular nanotechnology from a state school. When he was looking at trying to become a professor a lot of the schools he was applying to wanted someone with a degree from MIT/Harvard/Yale/etc.
