Looking at solid motor mounts

Well I was crawling around under the car and noticed chunks of red poly on my k member. Sure enough, it looks like my prothane motor mounts are either melting or breaking apart.

I found some threads in some Corvette forums from years ago that talked about this problem with the prothanes.

I just don't want to deal with more of the same after I go in there yet again.

I am looking at the UPR vs MM solid mounts. Kelly is a "daily driver," but let's face it, she has a lot of mods already with delrin bushings, race springs, and soon solid diffy bushings; so to hell with the ride quality. That is what the Audi is for.

Having said that, I would like to hear from those who have gone to the solid motor mounts and also those who went with the cheaper UPR mounts.

Thanks all.

FWIW, I'm running stock motor mounts on my 04 with no issues. And I'm sure I'm making a couple more horses than you are.

We just changed my buddies motor mounts at 60k in his 03 with stock replacements. He's at the same power level I am.

Just throwing it out as an option.

Merry Christmas..

Well I pulled the trigger on the UPR solids, but that doesn't mean that I have to install them. My transmission mount is Energy suspension with stacked fender washers to raise it to prothane the mount level.

If I go back to oem, I will need the whole set, though they are cheap enough from RockAuto.

i think that for a road car you will want to have at least some sort of dampening from the drivetrain, won't you? and i don't mean just for ride quality as i am right there with you op, because that wouldn't be an issue for me either. but i mean for overall vehicle longevity and itegrity. i mean unless it is a full on race situation which it doesn't sound like it is for you op. i dunno, just m2c.

but one thing that surprised me after recently pulling my terminators' engines within was how severly deteriorated all of the motor mounts were. the 04 had a nasty front cover oil leak and 130k, so that made sense to me, but my 03 had no leaks and only 85k, but they were still trashed. so maybe they're the type of thing that need to be replaced somewhat regularly.

But that's 85k/130k and 17/18 years. So it's not like you'll be swapping them out every few months. I do think the constant vibration from the engine would get annoying.

Solid is a bit over the top for a street car. I guess you can put them in and see for yourself if it is. I just don't like doing things twice.

I just changed mine recently when I redid the oil pan gasket. I pulled the entire kmember and what junk my motor mounts were.

I wonder if I got a bad batch prothane or whether it was Chinese junk.
I can't remember where I got them.

I guess my being NA and having ES trans mount won't matter much if I get rubber motor mounts.

I know the general rule is that the motor mounts need to be stiffer or equal to the trans mount, but that the trans mount should never be stiffer than the motor mount.

Absolutely Don’t put solid mounts in there, you’ll regret it. Save those for race cars.

I'm with everyone else. No bueno on the solid mounts. Just go with OEM replacements.
I wish I had just done this. When I had the engine out I decided on prothane poly mounts. Even the increased NVH from OEM mounts were a bit much and I don’t really care for it, but I’m used to it now so F it.

I have poly mounts in my 03 and solids mounts in one of my 99s (part of a Griggs kmember set up).
To be honest I can’t tell the difference. Both of these cars have full exhausts it should be noted so they “make noise “ while driving.
Recently while doing cooling system flush on the 03 I did notice my poly mounts were melting. I will likely replace with solid when the time comes to replace

Good to know that I am not the only one who is seeing the poly mounts melting or breaking up. Good info. Thanks.

Ordered from Rockauto....full set of oem motor and transmission mounts (DEA MFG)

I will look at someday making new poly inserts for the ones that failed as they are bolted together...and will keep my ES transmission mount as well.

Thanks all.!

Upon some further research lots of people saying the cheaper mounts can have increased nvh. It is what it is I just wanted to make sure I didn't have any other issues

As long as they don't melt, it is all good with me. And if they are a bit stiff, well I am replacing poly mounts...
