I need a new work laptop, the local network is cable only. I was tempted to pick an HP laptop at Costco but none of them have an ethernet port anymore. Looking up ethernet to USB adapters seems to be a lot of mixed feedback on speed/reliability. The applications I'm in will definitely crash/kick me out if it's dropping signal all the time.

I could always order another Dell but honestly not super happy with the Dell laptops we've had.

I use a Dell USB-C port replicator (maybe wrong name), to create an Ethernet port, and HDMI outputs for 2 additional monitors. Seems to work fine.

Andy, is your Dell hub (replicator) similar to this? This is an Anker hub. 79% 5-star and 12% 4-star rating which works out to 91% GOOD rating. Price is only $55.99 at Amazon.

First we need some requirements. USB 3.0? 1000mbs ethernet speed? Linux and/or Apple IOS Support?
Anker makes good products. This one covers all the major OS's and is usb 3.0 / 1Gbs.

either usb 3 or usb c and gigabit on a windows 11 machine (if it passes through a little under gigabit it's not the end of the world but I see plenty of them with people saying various ones are testing out at like 450, including some of the Anker models)

hell, Costco has a 90 return window, I'll guess I'll grab the laptop I want and an ethernet adapter, if it doesn't work I'll return it all... will still suck to be out the setup time but not the end of the world

The connection should throttle to the max speed capability of any adapter to avoid dropping packets. You're just going to have to scour the internet for actual throughput tests or buy and try.

I'm using a simple Amazon basics one here at work and I use it for everything from imaging computers to checking internet connectivity whenever there is an issue with either Wi-Fi or wired connectivity. No real issues with speed but of course we have one gig fiber here at work.

Mine is probably obsolete as its from 2019, but this looks similar to it from a connectivity stand point. Was an adjustment to get away from click in old school docks, but this has been fine.

That's what I would do. Costco, as you probably know, has an awesome return policy. I don't, though, recommend online. It's a different operation from the Club stores. And the returns are easier at a store, if you have one local.

Ya we’ve got 4 stores nearby so not too worried. 90 days no questions, gonna go look in the morning. Ended up doing a usb 3.0 to Ethernet for a few different reasons

I bet you will be just fine with that. USB 3.0 is not new, and is well proven at this point.

Yes, you should be just fine with the USB 3.0 to Ethernet option. Let us know which computer you buy today at Costco. (y)

Well that sucks. Interesting how you keep losing built in features but the price seems to go up.
Eh, Ethernet imports are cheap but now with SSD the thing is to get thinner and thinner… and outside of work stuff everyone has Wi-Fi or hotspot on your phone so who needs it? Dell has an equivalent model/price with an Ethernet port but feel like I’ve had better luck HP lately

That's a nice rig. I suppose they don't have them in their stores because the OS is more a business choice (Windows Professional). BUT.....the good news is that you can return your .com purchased computer to any Costco store (within 90 days).
