Before the thread title, have you ever heard of it?

Eddie Antar started it back in the early 70s, and skimmed hundreds of millions of dollars. Very interesting character, and very intelligent. It always amazes me how these very bright individuals choose to do something so illegal rather than put their minds to work making money legally.

This type of stuff is interesting to me... sub'd to watch later.

Same here.

It's incredible.

"We had so much cash, we were running out of places to stash it. All of the family member's houses had the ceilings and walls stuffed with it."

"We were skimming 20% of every dollar we took in"

"We sold $300-350mil a year, that were reported."

"Eddie paid for his nephew to go through college and get his accounting license so he could get hired on at the auditor's office that was responsible for auditing the Crazy Eddie stores".

His prices are insane.

Those commercials ran almost 24/7 on the basic cable channels of WPIX and WWOR. Also less frequently but frequently nonetheless were the ads for Dianetics. One of those was as freaky as hell.

Our basic cable brought in two NY/NJ channels and those commercials were all you saw. Ya, our cable package made us pay for outside the local channels most of New York saw for nothing. Interesting channels though. Jerry Carroll, the guy in the crazy eddie commercial(s) came across as insane rather than just the prices. The chain felt as if it was everywhere. Were the prices really insane? Obviously not.

Actually, supposedly their prices were insanely low. Often well below the wholesale market. He was buying off the black market.

I remember this guy's commercials when I lived in Philadelphia. There is a reference to Crazy Eddie in the movie The Accountant with Ben Affleck. The scam that was uncovered in the movie was the same one Crazy Eddie did.

I've got a great story about another really smart guy that broke the law in the Philly area and got away with it for decades till a million to one shot got him nailed. I'll post it up soon.

When it walks like a duck and quacks, it's a duck. Those commercials had shyster written all over 'em. At the time it seemed mob related or either hot or knockoff goods.
