The Ford F-150 Lightning electric
pickup truck's "kryptonite" is a road trip, according to the
Detroit News review of the vehicle. Auto critic Henry Payne
explains that the electric truck got him "170 miles of range"
on a trip up interstate 75 in Michigan, while its gasoline-
powered counterpart gets drivers "600 miles and 22 mpg."
"I've got the turbo-6 cylinder. I'm getting 600 miles and 22
mpg - I don't think I'll ever get one of those electrics,
" an
owner of a gas-powered F-150 told Detroit News auto critic
Henry Payne while he was at his third fast-charger of the day
during a road trip in a 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning EV tester.
Payne, who was on his way to Charlevoix, Michigan, had
informed the owner of the gasoline-powered vehicle that the
electric truck was only getting him "about 170 miles of range
on this trip up 1-75."
The auto critic explained that he had charged the vehicle
overnight to 100 percent, giving it a 320-mile range. He then
ran a few errands the following morning, and started his road
trip with 281 miles on hand.
But by the time he got to Saginaw, "the Lightning was getting
just 60% of estimated range and it was becoming clear to
the trip computer that we would not make it to Gaylord,"
Payne said, adding that the "281-mile range looked more like
168 miles."
The system then rerouted Payne to a charging station, but
when he arrived, the only two chargers there were already
occupied. So he drove to another facility that he knew had
four charging stations. When he got there, unfortunately, two
were occupied and the other two were being worked on by
technicians.

Starting to wonder when the false advertisement law suits start to pop up on that whole 300 mile, 350 mile range on these over sized R/C cars. I have yet to even hear of a Tesla owner getting what Musk has said is the range of it.

2019 P90 owned it for over 2 years and have yet to even get 225 miles out of a full charge of the 300 mile advertised range. He says you turn on the heat that effects range, A/C even winding down the windows effect range. He has to plan the route he has to take if he wants to go to Akron (55 miles one way) as if he hits more than 10 traffic lights up there, he might not make it back on a full charge!!!!!!

I like the lightning and would love to have one, but the price is ridiculous. They are around $20k more than an equivalent gas powered F150. Some people just don't understand that $20k buys a lot of gas.

The mileage is the next issue. It can't even supply enough range for a days worth of travel. In a lot of situations it can't even go half a day without needing a charge. I think the extreme drainage and charging will kill the battery in just a few years.

That must have been when I was in the hospital.
Upon further review….

I’ve been crunching the numbers recently as my order is supposed to be here end of the summer, beginning of fall….

The conclusion?

1. It doesn’t make any sense to buy this truck if you want a truck to do truck things…

2. It doesn’t make any sense to buy this truck if you’re thinking it’ll save the environment. It won’t. In fact, it’s worse on so many levels.

3. Battery replacement costs are ASTRONOMICAL. You’re not going to get anywhere near the same type of longevity as you would from an ICE engine.

4. You’ll NEVER recoup the money from buying a $75,000 EV truck at the fuel pump. NEVER.

5. As a Lightning enthusiast who owned a Lightning for some 16 years, I can truly say it’s an all around disappointment to the Name.

Instead, I’ve decided to keep my paid off 2017 Focus 1L 3cyl Ecoboost for commuting and I bought a 2022 F150 5.0 4x4 for 50k. (Thanks Nick.)

The focus gets over 40mpg and the truck has a 36gal fuel tank and all the capabilities of a 4x4 off-road vehicle.

Buying an Electric F-150 for $75,000 that can’t tow 5000lbs even 100miles makes zero sense.

Lets say someone miscalculates the trailer input (weight) on the Ford? I guess the chance arises that you might be screwed and be away from a charger much earlier than anticipated.

to be fair, this is a knock is against all EVs, not just the lightning

until they figure out fast charging and something with a alot more power density than lithium ion this is going to continue to be a problem

I think for a good while EVs are going to be best used for around town when they can be charged at home on a regular basis. If you only go out of town once or twice a year maybe you deal with it.

Any kind of regular long-ish trips, towing etc... ICE it is
