Anyone here in Nursing/Medical Field?

I think I have decided I need a change of scenery. I've been in the IT biz for going on 10 years and to be quite honest I can't stand it anymore. I really can't see myself doing this for another 20-30 years without blowing my brains out. I think most of it has to do with being bottled up in a cube for 9 hours out of the day and the generally acrid coporate environments.

I know several people that are RNs and despite the stresses that come with the job they love it. I've always been intesested in medicine and love the challenge of something new, plus with a BSN the pay is pretty good. I would like feed back from people already in the field. Do you like your job? Are you satisfied with your career? What is your specialty (ER, Mental, Staff)? Have you ever seen or done anything that made you want to puke?

It is definitely an interesting field to be in.

Pay is increased for a floor nurse about a quarter an hour for your BSN. I am currently working on my masters in nursing and then pursuing men’s health and fitness; addressing hypogonadism in aging men and treating it.

One thing is for sure; the possibilities are endless in nursing. You can make anywhere from 50k to 140k a year as an RN, if you decide to go the CRNA route, you start of making 200k a year. The vertical and horizontal movement across the nursing spectrum is very broad. I have done most of my nursing as a heart nurse i.e.. cath lab, ICU.

Brother in law is a nurse practitioner...he makes big bucks and works 3 days a week...helps runs the ICU at a hospital in ATL.

My fiance is a nurse and received her BSN last May. Her first full-time job was at a small private hospital and she didn't like it at all. She worked on a floor that dealt with long term rehabilitation and the administration on the floor sucked the big one (as it does with nearly every job I've encountered). She now has a new job at with small private family physician office and she loves it. The pay is good, her hours are good, and the people she works with seem really nice. Plus the job security is always there.

Excellent field... my ex is an RN, going back to be a nurse practicioner.

I myself am in the same boat as you, been doing Graphic Design for a few years, starting classes this summer to get a Bachelors In Radiation Therapy, and probably after that pursue something further into Oncology. Medicine has always interested me, i figured, why wait any longer.

Good luck with your decision. Make sure you talk with people in the field, maybe even call a hospital to to some job shadowing (most colleges require it as well)

Edit: Also, you may want to look into Physician's Assistant programs... 2 year degree as opposed to 4 year, and they make pretty decent $.

Military trained Nurse here and love it, the jobs are plentiful and you get bored doing one thing you can always switch to something else. ei. Pediatrics, woundcare, ER..... I teach Nursing now for the State and it's great.

My wife is an RN, and does home health, loves it, money is great too!!
