the stock guage. I know this isnt the right way to guage temps
True... you'll have to use the odometer diagnostic or a programmer to get accurate coolant temp readings. But yes, assuming your original coolant was 50/50, it sounds like you refilled with a 25% concentration and this should put you around 35-40% which is fine.

Thanks for the reply. Joel, are you saying from my sct tuner I can get accurate temps? From datalogging? Thanks.

Yes they will be acurate. The datalog reading will be comming straight from the PCM. Just connect your sct into the port and datalog straight from the handheld itself. No need for a laptop for ect reading

He also says you can use the odometer diagnostic which I assume you are not aware of. Hold the tripmeter reset button and turn your key to "ON" and keep holding the reset button until the display shows "TEST". Now it is in diagnostic mode. You can start your car and flip through the various readings like tach, mph, water temp, etc. I don't remember exactly which one is water temp and its been a while since I did this myself so anybody correct me if I mistated anything. This will reset your tripmeter. To return to normal mode, turn off your key.

This may be a dumb question but is the tstat something that will help a mostly stock cobra?

I'm still running a stock pulley for another 6 months or so then will just be upper only. Car is my daily driver.

Would the car run any better with this one over the oem since the car is still so stock or should I wait till I'm running more boost to do the upgrade?

Thanks

Running the engine a bit cooler can make a small amount of hp but the main benefit is decreasing the chance of detonation. So generally it's a good idea to do so if the vehicle has been tuned outside of OEM specs, which usually means running more timing advance than stock. Ideally the fan settings should be lowered in the tune to optimize the low temp thermostat's effectiveness.

So the short answer is if you have a handheld programmer or custom tune- it's a good idea to do the thermostat. Stock tune and pulley- I probably wouldn't bother with it.

I doubt that there would be any measurable effect on economy but no I don't have any data for you on that. The testing would have to be done under very strictly controlled conditions... would be interesting to see the results though.

Great thread.

Needed a new t-stat, came across the Reische brand, stumbled on this site, and here I am! My first post.

Just got the tracking number to my new Reische 170 degree thermostat. This was a very useful thread for me. Thanks!

UPDATE: Installed and working like a charm.

Just installed my Reische thermostat today. There was a huge difference. It was hot and humid as hell today. The car idled at 180*, before around 200*. On the highway, it stayed at 180*-185*, before around 195* to 205*. After a couple pulls, it will go to 190* and come right back down. I also adjusted the fan settings as rec. in the instructions. I def. see a difference and worth the money. Good product!

great product, a must have before any other mods. IMO although its not listed in my mods, I consider a pre-req before getting anything else.....

over heat on the road course

Not sure if you can help, but never know until you ask....

Here's the situation... I Road Course track my 03 SVT about 4-5 times a summer. I have 14 psi boost from a pulley change/long tube headers/Accu-fab T/B and a cold air kit (K&N).
After about 5 to 6 hard laps, the engine starts to overheat, and it pukes a bit of rad fluid out the rad cap. I let cool for 45 minutes and take it again and same thing, so I go home.
I usually make it home (1 hour drive) but from then on it overheats in everyday driving right up the "H" on the temp gauge.
The first time it hapened the Ford Dealer replaced the Thermostat and told me it was toast. The 2nd time, same thing and they replaced. Now the 3rd time they are suspicious and doubt they will keep replacing them forever (I have a Ford Platinum warranty with 3 years left on it, car only has 22,000 miles on it).
Why is this Thermostat blowing all the time ?
A friend who tracks his Cobra has put a bigger Alum rad on and he says to leave the coolant level 2" under the recommended fill level to allow some expansion head space, but this doesn't make sense. I haven't tried it yet, do you think it will make a difference ?
Any other ideas ?
Will your Thermostat help ?

signed.... Hopeless
