So my wife and I have found some stone verneer stuff that she wants me to install on the wall above our fireplace, and around the fireplace. I am going to include the link to the stuff from Menards. They are premade panels that are •3/4" to 1-1/4" random nominal thickness x 6" H x 24" W. My question is, can this stuff be stuck directly to sheetrock? In the instructions it says that it can be stuck to concrete block or cement board. I know when doing tile in the past that I've stuck tile around fireplaces, or back splashes that I've gone directly to sheetrock.

So, just wondering if I could get away with sticking it directly to the sheetrock?

Here is the link to the stuff.

I know that Lowes Desert Quartz Ledgestone (similar to the product you're using) does allow installation over sheetrock as long as the sheetrock is primed if it is new. Existing sheetrock should be then okay. There is a 10' height maximum with the Ledgestone product. Over 10' you would need to use cement board for better adhesion.

1" thick material is going to be very heavy. Most wall tile is 1/4" thick. I know tile compound has a lot of surface area, but sheetrock is probably not the best surface for material this thick.

The ceilings are standard 8' ceilings. The width that I'm covering is 78" wide and the height will be roughly 4' or so. So do I need to add hardibacker to the sheetrock?

I work at Lowes and yes, it will work. Just a little tip, use the corner spacers. It will make it 10 times easier and will look 100 times better. Good Luck!

I think the stuff we are looking at from Menards is thicker and heavier than the stuff from Lowes? I am going floor to ceiling with the stone and just worried with that much on just Sheetrock that it may be too heavy. If I do go directly on Sheetrock, what type of adhesive would I use? I'd consider the Desert Quartz Ledgestone stuff from Lowes if I knew it would go with out new floors I'm getting ready to install. Our floors are going to be a darker gray barn wood look.

When I did masonry we always used cement board or plywood with tar paper and lattice wire with a scratch coat. It's your house, I would rather over build then have potential problems in the future

The key when installing tile over sheetrock is the weight of the tile. Sheetrock has a limit as to what weight it can hold, before the "paper" surface rips off the drywall. I did an entire wall around an electric fireplace I installed. There is a newer (to me anyway?!?) product used for tile that I have used in a bathroom around a mirror an now on the entire wall in our "sitting" room. It is a heavy duty double-sided tape, used specifically for tile. I added additional drywall screws to our wall and tiled it from floor to ceiling with this stuff and it has been rock solid for over a year. I haven't yet grouted some of the seams you can see, but will get around to it. It's pretty hard to mount interlocking "stacked" stone tiles with adhesive tape on the back and not get a few gaps. Once that stuff touches the drywall, it's stuck.

I'm looking at doing this on my foundation outside. I used real rock verneer field stone for my fireplace. It's actual field stone hammer split and then the back is cut flat to apply to the surface of the fireplace. I love the way it came out!
