i dont think youre going to find any new rwd car for under $20k. even the most basic colorado starts at just over $20k.

my mom has a civic. i hate that thing. you can feel every little thing in the road. just not a comfortable dd imo. id at least spring for a used accord. way more comfy for a DD and will go a looong time before needing anything.

as far as timing chains/belts. i havent looked into it but from what ive seen with toyota/honda is that the V6s have chains and the 4s have belts.

to each his own lol. I drove the civic and the accord back to back. They felt exactly the same to me. Handling, braking, everything ...

You are correct, sir.......from my search thus far at least. I've hammered the new car market and exhausted myself on it. I have to start to dig into the used market and see what I can find. Honda has incredible value b/c their used stuff is so close in price to their new stuff, that much I have found. I might jump on a used sporty Fit, and used Focus if I can find those for a low enough price. Looking at used Civics too.

I would like to get something comfy and looked at the Camry's too. If I go the Camry route I would get one used. I built one on Toyota's website and wasn't happy with the wheel options and other things of the newer ones. They have the BBS ones that I looked at. I like their older BBS offerings.

The Fit is really well designed, it has almost the same front leg room as a Toyota Camry and more rear legroom than the Camry. The cargo room (with the seats down) is somehow twice what the Fiesta has, and more than what the Focus has.

Honda engineers are really good at getting interior space out of their cars. I remember that from my buddy's CRV, that thing could hold more than my Exploder.

My biggest hold up would be that it's built in Mexico, so there might be some build quality issues but overall, I would expect it to be a reliable car with very good resale.

Yeah, the Fit stood out to me if I go the new route (and used route even) and the Toyota iM......and Civic.....and Civic Hatch..... My plan now is to see what I can track down in the used market and go from there.

I have not driven many cars but the 14+ fiesta st is the most fun I've had driving ever!
Even better then the 15 mustang gt and 07-10 gt500. Somebody said he enjoyed his st so much he's keeping his 911 in winter storage 8 weeks longer than normal. For 20 grand you can't beat the 30mpg .95g gocart in the fist.

They are insane fun, it's just that the size of it is so impractical. I've been driving vipers, cobras, Porsche etc in 2016 and the Focus ST has put a bigger smile on my face than any of the others, it's bizzare

My room mate got a toyota/scion iM.

Pros
Rides well with better than average road noise for that segment.

J VIN (that's actually why he skipped on the Fit), it's better put assembled than a Focus tbh.

Roomy enough

Sound system is pretty good

Visibility isn't bad

I think he paid like $17,000 for it

40mpg

Cons
Paint quality has to be the worst on the market. Every time he gets a door ding it takes paint, but this seems to be the case more and more with cars.

That 1.5 is anemic for lack of a better term. I think it would be better in a Fit due to the weight difference. Also we are over 6000' with DAs reaching 10,000 in summer, so that could also have a lot to do with it.

How big are you? I have pretty big thighs and they don't really fit very well under the wheel, even with it all the way up and the seat all the way down.

My coworker just bough a Toyota iM. He didn't consider another similar car because the toyota dealership was only 1 bus ride away, and the rest were 2 or 3 and it was raining that day.

He had just sold two cars so he had to take the bus.

X2 - In November I gave $4k for a super clean '03 SVT Focus ZX3 with 130k. Not RWD but very fun. I drive it in the winter and on rainy days. Maybe 5k miles a year. Great handling. Needed nothing - all maintenance done - timing belt - brakes & rotors - with heated Recaros ( they are amazing seats - way better than base interior ), power moonroof, EAP, Borla exhaust - and the best color CO. Good mileage and you can have a lot of fun without going fast. Great solid little car that is done depreciating - sell it in 3-5 years and break even. And I've had people 6 feet tall in the back seat with plenty of room.

I would love to do something like that, with less mileage on it though. I have to see about the used market.

This is what you hear from everyone about the ST's and RS's.

There is a guy on the RS forum who has a GT350 TP, GT4, 991.2 Carrera s, and Evo X FE, I noticed he tracks his RS constantly and asked him which one is the most fun. He told me he finds himself driving the RS the most on the street and track, and that consumables being cheaper was just a bonus.

I don't know if I buy that, the GT4 is supposed to be one of the most impressive cars on the planet. But I know the RS is very good.

Good to know. I'm not a big guy really. I'm 5'11 about 185 lbs (used to be at least, haven't weighed myself in awhile, ha). I don't need anything too big. I sat in the iM and felt comfortable. The '17 iM's are at $20,380 currently. Got the same identical price at the dealership and when I built one online. That price is more than likely going to keep me away from getting it. You never know though.

I was told the Scion name is going away and I guess going with the M combo's now. I wonder how BMW feels about it. BUt I have no clue though.

Oh wow, I'm going to take much more time with my choice. I never buy cars though and I'm a very methodical person by nature.

They are nice looking little cars too. I've not driven any of those however (ST, RS...). I'm sure I would like it though.

I build Subarus every day. I know I'm going to sound biased when i say this, there is nothing out there like them. If they have ground clearance it will go through it. I own a lifted 97 f250 diesel and it stays parked during the winter months and we take my wifes Subaru Legacy. They handle great.
I believe i get some sort of family/friend discount. I'm not sure what all it knocks off as far as price goes. The price depends on if the model is built in the US or Japan. Bigger discount if the model is built here.
Let me know if you want me to look into it. We build the Outback, Legacy and the Impreza 4 and 5 door here in Indiana.

The GT4 is the new GT3. The 991 being auto and 4 wheel steer has lost a lot of driver feel from what I've heard. The GT4 still has this. Interesting to know Randy P said he likes the 350R more than the GT4.

Just knowing the RS ST are being driven and compared to these great drivers cars as a testament to how good the are!!

Speaking of GT4 I spent some time in this one. Kind of hard to compare though lol. I'll have the ST on track this year and I can not wait.

If you track the st keep an eye on the brakes if they are stock. Short autocross runs are fine but full on track days will cook them

Wow, very nice. And that is the exact reason why I was looking at Subarus, because they have great reliability and good value. I like the Impreza 5 doors for sure and it would be great to get one of those. I certainly wouldn't turn down an offer to get a better priced one, so any help on that front is greatly appreciated.

I looked at a couple of RS's last night for the first time seeing the interior in person.......loved them.

No reason to be scared of miles, especially with a manual transmission. Regular maintenance is no big deal.

Yeah, I've been checking out a few websites on used cars and more been kicking around that idea too. I found a few good Civics and Mini Coopers for good prices. What is the story with Mini Coopers, I don't know much about them, are they good cars to own? Do they have good reliability, affordable maintenance, good value?...

the mazda 3 got good ratings.....starts at $18k new

I looked at those but just wasn't sold on the looks. However I did like the look of the nicer trimmed exterior but I'm sure it's going for more than I want to spend. EDIT: Make that the 5 door version. I just built one out on their website and it came out to be $22,395. Not bad all things considered.
