I have had it with my TR3650. Just done... That said for the cost of a rebuild or T56 conversion I figure I can do conversion to a Mach 1 Automatic setup. Has anyone done one?

I am trying to get a parts list sorted out and figure out what I have to do ECU wise. I am currently pretty stock motor wise but have picked up an 04 Rear end I am going to swap and have future plans for a long block swap. Currently I run 3.73 but the replacement IRS has 4.10s.

Parts List:
  • 4R75W - Don't want to go overboard I only have around 300 RWHP might make it to 450 at some point... What upgrades do I need to be concerned with for a long life?
  • Cross member and Trans mount.
  • Converter - I have heard all sorts of things on this. Might stick with a stock converter - might upgrade to ~3500 stall...
  • Pedal Swap
  • Shifter - Leaning toward B&M (http://www.bmracing.com/products/81001-automatic-shifter-hammer-shifter-1994-2004-ford-mustang/)
  • New Drive Shaft
  • 8 Bolt Flex Plate
  • ECU? Programming? This is the part I am most concerned about. I am pretty sure I will need a tune just to make the setup work right. Not sure if I would end up at Paul's High Performance or Lido at Alternative Auto Performance for a true dyno tune. Paul's did the original tune but Lido had that BA Mach...
  • Wiring Harness - Would Mach 1 harness work? Require Mach 1 ECU? Is that compatible with the rest of my wiring harness?
  • Wiring Changes going from Manual to Auto
ANY help would be great. I found a good read on an 03-04 swap but the author went Manual Valve body.

For ECU its easiest to pick up an automatic 03-04 Mach1 ECU and get it retuned with SCT for the engine/mods.

You may find more on this in the Terminator section as a few of them have done this swap.

I have been tossing this around for a while in my head. The original 3650 has all the typical issues. It was never good and I am pretty sure the synchros are on their last legs. It is so expensive to get one that is well done I would (and have) seriously think of going T56 first if I stayed manual. I have an 04 Mach 1 3650 and an 03/04 SVT clutch sitting in the garage even. I just don't want to put it in and have a meh transmission again.

Makes sense. I never had issues with the 3650 in my 01. Even behind the big bore stroker. But I didn't power shift it a whole lot or anything. Once I went to the T-56 I never looked back. I like the gear spacing a lot better than the 3650.

Have you thought about 6r80? I'm sure the extra gears would help and with even your anticipated power level should handle it no problem stock. Pretty sure someone just came out with a controller.

You can do this with a 99-04 Mustang GT auto PCM as well. I have used a 1999 GT and a 2004 GT PCM on my car. Mach 1 auto harness.

If anyone is thinking about this at all I'd suggest they grab a trans ASAP. Even if it's just to store somewhere. I have a feeling the junkyards are going to catch on and jack up the prices. The good thing is the transmissions out of the trucks can be used as well. I think there's a bracket that needs to be changed and maybe the tailshaft housing.

I have only had limited time the last couple days and did a LITTLE more digging last night. Seems there are a issues with 03/04 computers after about 6800 rpm? Is there truth to that? At least that's what a lot of Mach posters said elsewhere.

As for the GT PCM - is there a significant difference between boxes? (Yes PCM would be the correct term...) Yes the tune would be different and I have seen a guy run a DOHC Lincoln in a GT with the GT PCM even before a tune. (Not sure EVERYTHING he changed.)

And then there is PATS to deal with in swapping an PCM...

Basically - I am looking for the most pain free wiring option. I can handle get the car tuned.

No I hadn't thought about that. I would hope it handles my current power level now sweat and even an upgraded level or two... :) Honestly sounds like more work and expense though.

Yeah, it will be a little more but it's unique. Just throwing it out there. The controller looks to be around a 1000 bucks so that does hurt. But the trans is so strong stock you don't need to touch it so that offsets some of the controller cost.

I agree. Pretty soon the 5.0/6r80 is going to be the 5.3/4l80 of the future. Truck motor/trans combos are so cheap. And as more and more people come out with controllers the price will drop even more.

A stock 5.0/6r80 sprayed fox/sn95 would make a fun street combo for pretty cheap. And with perfect street manors.

I realize this Post is from last year (2017), but I currently have a 03 Mustang GT/Cobra Project and I too am looking at doing a 5sp trans swap for an Auto Trans swap!

I am looking at a 4R70W from a 03/04 Mustang GT or a 4R75W from a 03/04 Mach 1 (I heard the Mach 1 Auto Trans is more Stronger than the GT Auto Trans) or the new 6R80 6sp Auto Trans from the 2015-2017 Mustang GT.

I would suggest talking to Frank at Power by the Hour aka PBH ( https://pbhperformance.com/ ) if you haven't already! If you haven't got it all together already!...He is very knowledgeable about these Manual to Auto Trans swap, especially the 6R80 6sp Auto Trans.

His Shop # is: Tel:(561) 737-2331 (EST) M-F: 8:am - 5:pm...Even though I am a little late but I Hope this Helps or Someone else who is thinking doing a similar swap!...God Bless!
