Why use the axle vent instead of the diff. cover in the higher location? Besides the differentials, are the earlier axles different the the later models years like the Boss used?

When you accelerate hard, the lube in the diff will transfer to the rear of the case. Especially when the oil is hot, it will force its way out of the vent. Capping the diff vent and placing an expansion system off the axle vent will let the thermal expansion of the oil take place, but not force it out to atmosphere.

Bingo....

I have the Ford Racing M-4033-G2, it's dual purpose, looks nice and it and has load bolts to support the differential bearing caps. A good piece if you drag race.

Got a new rear diff cover for my '08. I noticed the new one has a vent on the top, the old cover is solid. Do I need to cap an old vent somewhere else If I install this cover? Or leave this one out an cap
Just received my from cover from steeda, came with longer bolts and a plug for the vent hole on the cover, bought this so I can move the vent to the top of cover

I have seen the SVTPP finned cover and I believe it also has a plate up in the area you are talking about, below the vent hole. I would think that the plate is more of a shield or deflector to keep the gear lube from getting to the vent hole directly. Think of the gear lube under hard acceleration, it is going to go to the rear of the cover, up the cover, and the ring gear is also going to assist in moving the lube upward inside the cover. If there were no shield or deflector under that vent hole, there is a good chance that gear lube would be pushed directly at the vent hole. With the metal shield there, the gear lube is directed away from the vent area while still allowing the differential vapors/pressure to vent at that location. <<Those are just my thoughts on why that metal plate is in place in the vent area.

Thats how it works, but it still pukes out. I wasted $40 at the track one day discovering this after a run.

Best advice, plug the diff cover vent, run a catch can off the axle tube port

All other forms of rear end venting WILL leak to atmosphere.

Leave the shield in place and make sure you tighten the vent down.

If you road race your car, you should definitely look into the expansion canisters that a few vendors make and sell. No matter where you place the vent, you're likely to have some spitting out under the high heat and pressures that road racing puts on the gear oil.

If you don't road race your car, there's likely no need for the expansion tanks and I've found that leaving the vent in the axle tube and the dif cover works great for regular street driving and occasional drag racing. No leakage or odors at all since I did this and I had a pretty significant leakage problem before I did add the vent in the dif cover.
