Just got a motor build quote and have questions

I just have a quote for the short block but this is right in line with what Im expecting. Block is being sleeved. 1000 hp on the street is a lot to ask and expensive for any build. Especially an Al block mod motor. Its the old pay to play saying. That said I feel better spending the money now verses slinging a rod through a 4K block only to have to start again. I only hope my choice of the double key cobra jet crank doesn't come back to haunt me.

Why do you say that? That's a pretty common upgrade, shouldn't have any issues there.
The problem with the stock or SCJ cranks is once you step up to the 4.0L or larger superchargers you take a much larger chance of breaking the crankshaft snout. This is aggravated by bouncing the engine off the rev limiter. The harmonics in the crankshaft of mis-firing cylinders while under full engine load is exasperated while trying to turn a larger supercharger. This only induces more stress into the crank snout. The Whipple 4.5L due to its size and mass has the reputation of breaking crank snouts during hard shifts

This is what is keeping me up at night. I did specifically asked about running a 4.0l supercharger and was told a double keyed SCJ crank would be enough.
We shall see.

I'm aware of the issues with the bigger blowers, but not sure why Ken said he hoped double keying the crank wouldn't come back to bite him. Never heard of an issue there.

20k is almost what im paying for mine,and mine has billet crank and 300m rods.Thats including the work i had the machine shop do to the block and rotating assembly and head work (valves,seats,guides,porting)to my head porter,im doing the assembly though.

I picked up some bare 2012 heads for 1500,and a 2011 block that was sleevable for 2k,spent over 6k on my rotating assembly,5k into the heads and 3,500 to sleeve and machine block.Billet oil pump with billet timing components.

Didn’t John Mihovetz at Accufab document some bad harmonics in the stock cobra jet crank around 67-6800 rpm?

Probably did but a well balanced CJ crank at $300-400 can be bought about 10 times over a custom billet deal.
Just sayin.

I'm with you though, if I build it to a goal, I'm not concerned with cost. My current 5.8 has a dual keyed JDM balanced crank as I was only wanting 1000rwhp max.

The estimate looks about right to me. I would definitely double key or pin the crank. The 5.8L aluminum is more $$$ than the old iron Duke. 1000 + HP is a handful on the street. Be safe , first & enjoy

This is a 1st world problem thread if I’ve ever seen one.

Still depressing.

I’d like to shoot for 750 and a decent hooking suspension in a few years.

I’ll shoot myself if I ever soend 20k on a motor that isn’t in a half-million dollar muscle car from the 70’s.
