Looking for help from anyone who has experience with older 5.0’s. I have a 1995 Cobra that I’ve been chasing gremlins on for a few months now. I bought it with 72,000 miles back in July. I’ve put 8,000 miles on it since then. A quick list of what’s been replaced as follows:

- Air Filter

- Spark Plugs

- Wires

- Cap

- Rotor

- Coil

- IAC

- TPS

- TFI Module

- Battery

- Fuel Pump

- Fuel Filter

- MAF Sensor

I had an issue a week and a half ago where the car wasn’t starting. We screwed around with it for a few minutes starting under the hood. I was messing with the wires on top of the cap and the coil and it would turn over but if you tried to rev the engine up it would shut off and die. Was able to get it to do that two more times with the same outcome. Then we moved to the trunk and messed with the inertia switch. It wasn’t triggered but we still pushed the button to ensure it was all the way down. After we did that the car started. It ran fine for about week after that. I figured maybe the fuel pump needed to be replaced because it did feel low on power sometimes, almost like it wasn’t getting enough fuel. So we replaced it. Looked at the inertia switch again and it looked like it was in working order to us (better than the other one we had on hand) and the car started right up just fine. I drove it home last night and parked it. Went to start it this morning and it’s now exhibiting the same things as it was doing a week and a half ago. It cranks forever but just doesn’t start. I played with the inertia switch (setting it off by tapping it and then pushing it back into the on position) but to no avail. The car will not start. Just cranks.

Does anyone have any idea where to go to next? I can hear the pump priming when I turn the key and we're positive it's getting fuel pressure to the rail. I’m getting fed up with this thing because I just want to drive it and even that is becoming impossible. I appreciate any advice or pointers.

Is the TFI module a Motorcraft replacement? If not, put the old one back on (if you still have it).

Otherwise, it leans towards it being the PIP sensor inside the distributor (more common to replace than the TFI module)

Replace the sensor with an OEM Ford or Motorcraft replacement part.
Motorcraft Part Number: DU50
OEM Ford Number: E9TZ-12A112-A

Make sure you mark the distributor before you take it out. It will make it easier to put everything back.
1. Housing to block (for timing purposes). If the base timing hasnt been changed the notch on the distributor should line up with the notch on the block (=10 degrees base timing).
2. where #1 cylinder is on the cap, related to anywhere on the engine
3. where the rotor is related to the lower distributor cap.

I've went ahead and ordered an OE replacement style distributor instead of any overpriced MSD garbage. From a few other suggestions from other people it's leaning towards a bad PIP in the distributor. Will report back when we install it.

It's advanced to 14 degrees and I'm running 93.

I had the same problem on my 94 Cobra, TFI module replacement didnt work, I would say the PIP sensor, replaced with a new motorcraft distributor and worked fine ever since.
