So, with what I do with the car, which is our short little road course out here in Albuquerque, and occasional street driving, I’m looking at ditching my killer chiller and going back to a heat exchanger. The killer chiller is great, it just doesn’t work for what I do with the car. So, time address some cooling. I already am in on the group buy for a racebronco hood, it has a 170 tstat. I’m doing an external oil cooler, but the problem I’m having is deciding on whether to get a h/e with fans or not. I’ve done quite a bit of searching, but can really only find info related to cars that are dragraced, not road coursed. Anyone have any opinions on whether I should do fans or not? I would also like to box in the h/e at some point.

I’d like to solve the puzzle please, AC/DC.
Seems the cool thing to go with nowadays is a GT500 heat exchanger. I had a killer chiller once and I literally threw it away. Leak after leak, it never ended.

Oh but it has to be in the form of a question.

Correct answer is "Who is AC/DC?"

I take Shelby's for $500 next, please!

So, the factory gt500 h/e with no fans? Thats better than an afco or fluidyne one? I saw gords pop up quite a few times, but looks like you can’t get them any more. Guessing Revan never ended up making one for our cars, as they are a big upgrade on the gt500’s I guess. What year gt500 is people using?

Is LFP still making dual pass heat exchangers? For the gt500 style you have to make some hangers to make it work. If your up to that then getting like a vmp or raven racing gt500 heat exchanger is the way to go. If you go with the fans your gonna need to upgrade your alt.

Also what speeds are you running at your short course track? If your speeds are mostly under 60mph the fans should help. If its a high speed track where youll be over 60mph then you may not need the fans.

I’m not sure if they are or not. Seems to be a lot of horror stories going around with them. I’ve had the killer chiller for probably 6-7+ years, so I’m out of the loop on current h/e info. I thought I saw somewhere that someone made a post about making a gt500 h/e working, but none of the pictures worked since it was an old thread, so it was kind of pointless.

The long front straight I think i touch around 90mph, everything else is really short and technical. So probably under 60-65 quite a bit. One thing I’m worried about is the fans more less “blocking” the airflow when they aren’t on or when they aren’t usefull at higher speeds. Cooling is the name of the game here, so trying to maximize it all. That’s what I’d like to box in the radiator and h/e if at all possible. Still haven’t decided where I’m going to mount the oil cooler.....

Best of both worlds and install both? I have a KC and recently purchased a Gords Ford HE. I'm going to attempt to install both with an electric 2 way valve so I can bypass the HE when desired.

Did you buy the Gords HE new or used?

You should look for it again. Larry did an awesome job recovering and re-hosting images from old threads - assuming it was on this site.

Back in the day LFP use to be good wasnt sure what happend now. To use a gt500 style HE there is a thread on the site that showed what had to be done to make it work. But does require making brackets. If you can find a GORDs HE thats a great option too.

As for the fans you want them on full time. Thats how most of us gt500 run them. The fans dont block air, it may slow it down airflow at your 90mph run but would be more beneficial at your lower speeds you will be running on your course. But making sure you have a nations or mechman alt with a good battery like XS will be a must because the draw can be up to 30amps on the fans.

Malcolmv8 made a thread on it. If the pics are dead he'll still have them. He always saves that stuff.

I ordered a new Gords unit last spring. I dont think he really keeps up his website. Took maybe a month or so to get mine. Said he was just changing fab guys so had some delay. Fantastic unit though, fills in the front end much better than AFCO.

Ya, I actually just read that thread last night. Weird how I missed it.
It's new, just received it a couple weeks ago.
Yup, got an email from him this morning. Didn’t realize you could still get them. Going to talk some more with him shortly.

Yup, talked to him on the phone today for about 35 mins. Looks like I’ll probably be going with their “option 3” heat exchanger with their fans. Hope to have it in a few weeks!!

Any heat exchanger with more surface area than the stock unit (or after market heat exchangers) will be better. Better only if you can get enough airflow across the whole surface and only if you have a way to get all the air thru the radaitor opening. If you do not have one of my hoods or similar you will not be able to get enough air flow and the air actually builds up at the radiator opening. Any bigger heat exchanger you install you will need to get more airflow. You will notice that the bumper support is about 6 inches tall and will impede air flow thru the bigger heat exchanger. I have a 80's Volkswagon Rabbit radiator as a second heat exchanger. I have cut out vertical part of the bumper cover directly behind the license plate. I than installed a black license plate frame and used a mesh filling the hole where the license plate goes. I have wing nuts for quick removal and install of either the mesh of the license plate frame.
