DMV: Title question? How to get info outside home state

I bought a vehicle locally. I didn’t run a carfax(my mistake) because it’s was once owned and driven by a very reputable mustang shop. For the record I bought it from the guy who bought it from the above mentioned. So no direct link with them. But anyways. Long story short.

The car was a total loss in 2009. The car entered my state NC with a clean West Virginia title. So the 3 owners have passed along a clean title. I paid cash for car, 6 months later when I attempted to get s small loan against car. Boom total loss. So somewhere along the line title has been washed.

Is there anyway to get any information about it outside of my State. The NC DMV obviously can’t investigate out of state lines. And as far as they’re concerned they are done. Now I have to disclose the damage and title will be savaged. Causing me to lose a lot of money.

I’m trying to find any information just at that chance I can pursue a rebuilt title if possible.

Here’s a pic of title wash and terminator tag I pulled off from under hood. I’m guessing Danny is WV owner

Man sounds like an ulcer waiting to happen.

I have no idea how someone could take a total loss title and turn it into a salvage title. In MN once a vehicle is deemed a total loss that's it, title gets mailed back to paying insurance company.

I don't know why you weren't told by your insurance company when they ran the vin#'s to put insurance on it. That it had a salvage title.

So reported a total loss in Texas in 09/09(07/09) then in 12/09 it's titled in Tennessee. Wow. I guess every state has different ordnance code/laws.

I guess I would try and track down some info from the dmv in Tennessee? and Texas.
Yeah crazy how it's reg'ed in Tenn late 08 then a total loss in Texas and back in Tenn and reg'ed in late 09.

Very crazy. Not to mention I’m the 3rd owner in NC to have it with a clean title. I’m going to contact TN DMV with info and see if there are any leads or info.
