Tough watch.
Watched it again. I don't know the backstory but why didn't they drive out of there while the vehicle was still operational?
You're probably right. Such a hard thing to watch. I can't imagine being out of ammo having to run out of there knowing the inevitable was about to happen.Probably a few reasons, and I'll be the first to admit I'm speculating some:
- Very difficult to return effective fire from inside a moving vehicle
- Unknown threat in their direction of travel. There could be an IED, a larger enemy force, a preplanned mortar target, etc
- The unit's SOP regarding how they respond to a convoy ambush
- Didn't realize the severity of the threat until it was too late
A lot of it is that we need to stop putting our special operations in these scenarios when we have infantry units designed to handle this very thing. I realize sof is a work-around to a lot of laws on war but it is not right to over-extend them and put them into situations where they are vastly outumbered and without support. They are highly skilled and can handle their own but there is a point where numbers can overcome skill and we saw it here. Our infantry guys are dying to get out there and fight, it's what we all joined for, so put some of these bigger units in the game and let them hone their skills and handle business. After seeing the original footage I can tell you, it was brutal. Much longer in length. Over 10 minutes. Explains what happened in much more detail. Being a marine I wondered what went wrong so quickly. Shit happens and unfortunately people die.
After speaking with several marine buddies I can also say the situation in Africa is a nightmare. No matter how special ground troops can be, without air support your sitting ducks for a million different scenarios.
It pisses me off that our foreign policy continues to create situations like this. I can guarantee you it wasn’t that long ago we could have simply leveled that country and not set foot on the ground.
Give the women and children a warning, give them a path out of If possible but once time is up game over.
Al qaida, Isis or whatever else is mostly funded and armed with our equipment. It’s like we are constantly sharpening the blade that we get stabbed with.
Part of being a military powerhouse is putting the fear into the heart of the opponent. Nobody is afraid of us anymore. You gotta be like mike Tyson walking into the ring in 1986. No talk, stare the opponent down and get ready to completely destroy them in a matter of seconds.
Mike won almost all of his early fights due to the fear he put into the heart of his opponent. We used to command that same fear militarily.
Now all the enemy sees is things like the women wanna be in the infantry and gays getting married that are commanding officers. Or people joining to get sex changes. Etc etc.
So why exactly are we there again (Not trying to start bs but asking legitimately)
Because that is where the focus has switched to. A lot of terror organizations have shifted to Africa and we have actually been there for quite a while now. It's sort of the secret war as there are currently as much as 160 operations being conducted there by US forces on a given day. Marsoc, Delta, SF, etc, are all conducting operations there to battle the usual terrorist organzations we have been fighting for the past couple decades. So why exactly are we there again (Not trying to start bs but asking legitimately)
