Hey gang. Question. Looking at a 2016 GT350R. Checked out the car and noticed no VIN tags on any of the body panels like my 1995 Cobra R. Did Ford stop putting on VIN tags on body panels to help identify original panels? Thanks!

They only had to do it for certain number of years when it was implemented by the govt. my 93 had them, my 04 did not. Somewhere in between there was when it stopped.

My '16 350 doesn't. My '04 Cobra doesn't, my '02 Audi A4 doesn't.

The '05 S2K I sold for the Cobra did.

The '17 MKZ I have sitting here while my own '17 MKZ is in the shop DOES.

none of these cars have ever been in an accident.

Maybe its only cars built in Mexico now that do?

Is it possible that they're marking them with a different method?

It might be on a sticker buried in a spot that's not visible. I've seen stickers used and I've seen where the VIN is stamped into a metal tag/lip of a body panel. Kind of depends on the whims of the manufacturer. I don't feel like checking at the moment, but I could swear I've seen stickers and stamps on my GT500. I haven't crawled through my R enough to notice yet.

I'm thinking along these lines as well. I'd be shocked that between the insurance industry and the manufacturers themselves, that all major parts aren't VIN traceable in some fashion. Auto theft and chop shops hurt both the insurance companies AND the manufacturer's component parts makers.

Radios and wheel covers aren’t the only popular stolen vehicle parts thieves take. They want whatever sells, from the mandated labeled parts to those that aren’t. NHTSA’s regulations require vehicle manufacturers to label their vehicle’s major component parts—called parts-marking—with the vehicle identification number (VIN) unless the vehicle line is granted an exemption. An exemption may occur if an antitheft device has been installed by the manufacturer as standard equipment on the entire vehicle line. Parts-marking has been shown to help reduce and deter motor vehicle theft, as well as help law enforcement authorities identify, trace and recover parts from stolen motor vehicles which ultimately helps with prosecuting the crime.
