Everyone has pretty much said it all.

My only advice is go with a catted "H" pipe if you want an aggressive tone. "X" pipes might perform better with Cobra motors due to it's design, but they sound raspy to me and I F'ing hate that sound.

The muffler will be a personal opinion based on preference/taste. Like everyone said, exhaust is like color, everyone will be different. On the Cobra I like the magnapacks.

On my 65 I have dynomax race bullets. Car sounded like a race car from NASCAR LOL. Nothing like an old school push rod motor and a healthy cam :D!

Ok, I can no longer claim my O/R H with Flowmaster Super 10s loud. That is wild.

That's exactly what my dad's 1964 Galaxie Wagon with an FE sounded like when he changed the mufflers in the garage around 1970, before putting the new mufflers on, lol.

LOLOL, I almost blew my speakers out! That fooking thing is LOUD. How do drive around without getting cited by every fooking cop???? ;)

Thanks guys!!! Really appreciate the positive feedback. I can tell you with that set up the exhaust is the entertainment because you ain't listening to the radio nor are you having a conversation in that thing LOL. I do agree it's over the top aggressive. However, I built that car for exactly that. I have ALWAYS wanted an old school car that was so loud it would piss off old ladies and scare children ROFLMAO!!!

Strangely enough I have never been pulled over for excessive noise or even cited for "illegal" exhaust. I have 1 3/4 inch (instead of the recommended 1 5/8) JBA headers they go into 3 inch straight pipe and then into the dynomax race bullets and dump before the axle.

I do believe I achieved my goal as all I need to do is go in the garage and just start it (without driving it) and then go back in the house with a huge smile. Also, when I would start it around 1 in the afternoon a lady from a couple houses down would come over and ask me to stop revving the car as I would wake her baby up LMAO!! I felt bad, but geez, it was one in the after noon, not 5 in the morning or 10 at night.

So, basically, I'm this guys neighbor, but instead of a monster truck I have a 65 Mustang ROFLMAO!!!

Lots of good combos that I've had over the years.

My favorites have been (in no particular order)

Stock manifolds/bassani X/ borla stingers
Kooks 1 3/4 3inch x pipe/ 3 inch bassani catback
Kooks 1 3/4 3inch x pipe/ Borla stingers
Stock manifolds x pipe/ Mac catback

You have 40 opinions, but I feel left out!!

I have heard a lot of setups and settled on straight through mufflers (ie Borla, SLP LM II's...)
Chambered mufflers have a different, not better or worse IMO, sound (Bassani, MAC, Stainless Works etc).
Headers give the sound a totally defined tone where it is not just noise like a truck.

Summary below after my years of research and playing with combos:

If you like the chambered route, I think MAC with or without cats and longtubes are FTW!! MAC systems are not the best made though.
If you can't play with Longtubes - get bassani catted X and stingers. (un catted no beuno)
If you can play with headers, get 1 5/8 or 1 3/4 , Catted x and stingers. (un catted is loud but still sound great with longtubes and this is what I am running with ARH 1 7/8)
ATAKS are too loud and unrefined IMO but that might be your cup of tea.

I have ARH 1 7/8 - they are actually quieter and they hang a lot lower than my Kooks 1 5/8.

I am not very partial to magnaflow but this is still one of the best Cobra's I have ever heard:

Listening to countless amount of exhaust I can say that, it’s all personal preference. As stated, sorry I’m sure you’re tired of hearing that, and fully grasp it. Now something that wasn’t really expanded upon. Since you’re keeping cats I have the belief you can run the more aggressive mufflers of any brand and be, for the most part, ok. The cats keep them tamed and most sound really nice. Same situation with an off-road system, most run the more tame mufflers with that set up. Or you could be like me and have an inner child to please and run the next level below straight pipe. Since you’re not happy with the Flowmasters I’d say you should try a straight thru muffler design, over a chambered system.

Pick your poison.
