In loving memory of Midnight...

Buried my girl about an hour ago. We found out she was a diabetic in December of 2016. After research I found out the typical lifespan of a dog after the diagnosis of diabetes is 2-3 years. She required 2 shots of insulin, a day, for the rest of her life. One of the side effects from the diabetes is they can loose their sight. The vision in her left eye (looking at her in the photo) was gone and her right eye wasn’t much better. It hurt watching her run into stuff, and she continued to loose weight. Keep in mind she was 90lbs before the diagnosis. I planned on taking her back this week for a revaluation of her diabetes, I was convinced she wasn’t getting enough insulin, as she ate like a pig but didn’t gain weight.
So, I get a call say she got hit by a car (my assumption is she couldn’t see the car) and I rushed home. My mother was waiting for me and a few neighbors were with Midnight. She was calm, but you could tell her leg was broken. They tell me the low life POS didn’t even stop. Common. Anyway we get her to the vet and I got to hear exactly what I feared the most. Due to her age, size, and medical condition she had the odds heavily against her for surviving the surgery. I couldn’t and didn’t want to say it, but my mother gave the ok, to end her suffering. In my eyes it’s killing the dog, but I understand that sometimes it’s more humane for the dog. Being she would eventually go fully blind and most likely the same situation would happen.
The only flaw with having a dog is their lives are so short compared to ours. So, all we can do is enjoy our time with them while they’re with us.
Gone but never forgotten. I’ll love you always Midnight.

So sorry for your loss and she was a beautiful dog. I don't want this to come off as criticizing you or whoever was caring for her at the time because I'm sure you loved and cared for her very much but why was she running free around the road when she couldn't see?

We live in the country, and she hated any form of restraint. I decided a long time again I wasn’t going to put that dog through that, being she’d dedicate the next 30mins of her life to getting out of whatever form of restraint she was in.
This could’ve been avoided? Absolutely. But she rarely left the house and if you saw her in a cage you’d understand where I’m coming from. I understand the point you’re trying to make, and if I did it my dog would probably be alive.

I understand completely. Dogs do not belong left alone in a cage or tied to a tree.

@Recon RIP Midnight. This story hit very close to home. I lost my Nesta last Saturday (11/8/2008-4/14/2018). Very long story short- woke up on Monday morning, she seemed kinda 'off' and would not have breakfast, still had energy to play- Monday night did not eat again, same thing Tuesday, but playing less- I was always in total sync with her and know immediately if anything is wrong, so I took her to my vet- did blood work, some of her levels were off so took her for an ultrasound and they found a tumor on her spleen (already a bad sign given the high malignancy rate of them in older boxers)- gameplan was to remove it via surgery and then biopsy it and go from there. She had surgery Friday morning, was recovering really well, then when I was on my way to visit her at the hospital I get a call from the doc that she had vomited and aspirated and was having trouble breathing and her heart rate plummeted (she had some heart issues that were under control with meds for 2 years but at times like this it is dangerous)...I drove faster to try to get there and when I was 10 minutes away I got the call that her heart had stopped and that they could not save her. The rest is as you can imagine- broke me like a little baby and I am not ashamed to admit it. For me it seems to be getting more difficult each day since. RIP Nesta. I will love and cherish you forever. I just wish we had more time together. I am sure Nesta and Midnight will meet each other on the other side of that rainbow bridge they talk about, and all will be good.

So, so sorry for your loss. RIP Midnight.

This story hits home for me. My last dog became blind and then diabetic. She was super healthy for 8 eyars of her life. The last 3 weren't bad, but they got worse as time went on. I had to give her 2 shots of insulin a day, 12 hours apart. One at 5:30am and again at 5:30pm. I did this for 3 years. She was pretty good with walking around the house as I didn't move any furniture and she stayed downstairs where I mostly hang out, unless I took her upstairs with me. Finally one day she became pretty ill and I just decided that it was the best for her. That broke me for 2 days straight.
