Hey guys, I have a problem with my fuel gauge not reading accurately. I know some owners have mentioned this in the past as being an issue, but I didn't find anything in the forum/online about a fix, or potential fixes. My problem started after I replaced the bladder. I'm thinking my sending unit is bad because the tech checked the gauge cluster operation and the electrical was fine. Before I drop the cell to see what's going on, and, if it's the sending unit, Ford no longer offers it for the 2000 R. Have any of you had to replace this and if so, what did you use? If I recall, the arm with the float is pretty long. Thanks!

What do you mean by not reading accurately? Is it possible the foam is hitting the float?

Hey Paul. After the cell was re-installed, we put a small amount of fuel in and the gauge was between E and 1/4. I went to fill it up and was able to get 11.8 gallons in before the nozzle shut off. I continued to slowly put gas in until it topped off at the filler. I ran the car for a while until the needle started to go back down to Less than a 1/4 tank. Put more gas in. Again the same result. Able to put in about 10 gallons, that’s it. Did this cycle another two times with the same result. What you mentioned could be possible. I think the cell will have to come back down and we’ll re-check the float and sending unit operation. Any other ideas let me know. Thanks.

Sorry forgot to mention that after filling up the needle went up to just less than half. Needle doesn’t go to full anymore. Thanks.

My fuel gauge has never read fully empty or full. More like 1/8 to 7/8. As I remember, 18 gallons is actually what it took to refill the tank from being totally empty.

Filled up my 00R today. From the gauge reading of 1/4 until full it took 13 gallons.

Thanks for the update Paul. I assume your gauge isn’t reading full as you stated before?

The most I’ve ever been able to get into mine is 15-16 gallons.

I have not yet filled my new Fuelsafe tank that I put in last week, I only put about 8 gallons in it for now.

As soon as I run it down and refill it, I’ll post what it took.

If I remember correctly, refilling a new fuel cell held 18 gallons.

Thanks. Will be interesting to hear your results. Also, did you notice any differences in the new foam installed versus the original foam bladder?

No I did not, I bought a whole new tank and it came all preassembled from Fuelsafe with the bladder and foam in the tank already.

Did you notice that the replacement cells are different that the originals? The replacements have a larger bladder access hole and now have "drip holes" in the bottom corners.

Yes, the fuel cell had a large access panel on top for the foam and bladder guts. Probably a good 12x12 inch square with its own gasket and bolts.

Overall a pretty straight forward swap, took my buddy and I about 3 hours to swap it out.
