I was able to remove them by placing the jack on the pan lip on the side I was removing it from and jack it up a little. Came right out. Didn't even have to unbolt the K member

Btw this was on a tubular k

That tubular K member probably helped out your clearance issues. Maybe I'll try side by side like you did. Thanks.
Did you have to remove your oil dipstick? Did you have to unbolt your steering shaft?

you know what I completely read that wrong. I was thinking replacing the mounts with long tubes.

Unfortunately you will have to drop the k member. With the tubular its a tight squeeze. So yes you will have to remove the dip stick and steering shaft.

buy an engine brace to go across the shock towers to support the engine. Then unbolt the K Member, and drop it out of the way. Install headers and motor mounts, then reinstall everything.

Is there a decent amount of room once the K member is dropped? A friend of mine just said that he had a hell of a time installing headers on his 97 Cobra with the K member dropped. I'm not worried about pulling the engine and trans and get it done that way.

I did shorties and motor mounts without dropping the K (stock K member). I will never do that again without dropping the K. And that was with FRPP shorties. I'm sure long tubes would be even worse.

I'm taking the same manifolds off. I'm going to drop the K member and try it that way instead of pulling the engine.

I installed Hooker long tubes by dropping the stock K. The worst task I have ever had to complete on a car. **** those long tubes. Miserable.

Btw, just make your own mechanism to hang the engine. I made mine out of 2x4’s.

Damn, everytime I think I'm going to be okay with dropping the K member someone pushes me back towards just removing the engine, or at least lifting it in the engine bay. I was thinking about just using my cherry picker instead of buying the engine support bar.

The trick is to remove the k, then lower the engine down as far as possible. I remember it just felt like a big cumbersome jigsaw puzzle. The steering shaft goes through the Hookers which made it difficult. I would take one step forward then two steps back because I would be unable to install a bolt here before one was install there first. Just a pain.

I wonder how the BBK headers will work with the steering shaft...? Does anything on to if the engine have to be removed for me to lower the engine?

I don’t know about BBK headers. Sorry.

I didn’t disconnect anything. When you are lowering the engine, just keep an eye on coolant hoses, wires etc.

I have bassani mid length headers coming this week for my 96 anyone have experience putting a set of them in? I have access to a lift and plan on doing it myself but would like to be as prepared as possible after reading through some of your guys situations.

I'm guessing 2x4 sandwiching a plywood center would be plenty strong enough then..or 2x6 for sure

Another note, if I were to do it over, I would plan on deleting the SAI as well. Those connections on the front of the manifolds/headers is not fun.

I put on BBK long tubes, off-road H, kept stock mufflers with just lifting motor off mounts on my 98 Cobra. It was not easy, I capped off emissions buns, and bought a number of 10mm sockets, wrenches, and extensions. I put up a video after the install on youtube. This install was in my garage on 4 stands.
Good luck and be patient.
