FORD NASCAR MUSTANG REVEALED; WORLD’S BEST-SELLING SPORTS COUPE READY FOR CUP COMPETITION IN 2019

  • Ford unveils the new NASCAR Mustang that will compete in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2019 for employees at the company’s World Headquarters
  • World’s best-selling sports coupe moves to America’s most popular form of racing – for the first time ever – debuting at 2019 Daytona 500 in February
  • Ford Performance and Ford Design teams worked together on new model to create competitive race car that remains true to its heritage
DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 9, 2018 – Ford today revealed its all-new Mustang NASCAR Cup race car, the first time Mustang – the world’s best-selling sports car – will compete in NASCAR’s top-level Cup racing series.

“Mustang has raced since it was first sold in 1964,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s executive vice president, Product Development and Purchasing, who was on hand to help unveil the car. “After more than a half-century, it feels great to finally let Mustang run in the top echelon of America’s most popular stock car racing series.”

Even before Mustang became a global icon, its first competition was in 1964, when it surprisingly won the Tour de France Automobile, a grueling 4,000 mile, 10-day rally. Soon after, it began a racing legacy in SCCA Trans-Am, IMSA, NHRA, Formula Drift and NASCAR Xfinity – NASCAR’s second tier series.

“Ever since we announced in April that Mustang would be going to the Cup level in 2019, we’ve heard nothing but positive feedback,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “Our Ford Performance team has worked hard with the Ford Design team to create a Mustang that will be competitive on the track while remaining true to its proud heritage. We can’t wait to see it winning races in the NASCAR Cup Series next year.”

Ford Design and Ford Performance worked carefully to translate Mustang’s signature style to meet NASCAR rules, ensuring Mustang will look as great on the oval as it does on the street.

All 13 Ford drivers currently competing in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series were on hand for the unveiling for employees at the company’s World Headquarters, along with team owners and NASCAR executives.

“We look forward to seeing the Ford Mustang, a cultural icon, on the track in the most competitive series in all of motorsports,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. “Our sport eagerly anticipates the performance, style and fanfare the Mustang will bring to the track each weekend beginning at the 2019 Daytona 500.”

Mustang has been competing full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series since 2011 and has won a championship in all but one season. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won back-to-back driver’s championships in 2011 and 2012, while Roger Penske has claimed the owner’s title in four of the last five years.

Today’s reveal comes on the heels of a celebration of the 10 millionth Mustang off the assembly line in Flat Rock, Mich., on Wednesday.

The first race for the new NASCAR Mustang will be the Daytona 500 on Feb. 17, 2019.

Did Ford really have any choice but to put the Mustang into NASCAR if they still want a Ford to be driving? Since Ford is going all in on SUVs and Trucks with the Mustang and Focus Active being the only remaining cars (and the Focus will be a crossover IIRC), that was really the only option, right?

that's because it is the same generic car they are using now with different stickers on it.
Yep!

Can't believe that I haven't watched a Nascar race is over 2 years. And I don't miss it all all. That's even more surprising. And to think I was a very avid fan back when Dale Sr. was racing. Too many negative changes since then IMO.

I expected the Mustang to be officially announced after reading an article a year ago that it would be happening. As already mentioned, Ford's dropping of the majority of their car lineup left them really no choice.

Ford had to put something on the track. The Mustang is the only car left in their lineup.

I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I don't think a Mustang belongs on an oval. It belongs on a dragstrip or a road course.

You're right about the first part.

10million made, it can go wherever the hell it wants

...and Maximus said to Commodus, "the time for honoring yourself will soon come to an end."

Not bad. Now if NASCAR would just un-**** itself............

THIS.

I am still a diehard longtime NASCAR fan... we watch almost every week, and still go to a couple races a year, but they're making it harder and harder to continue so every year.

JJ48 fan here, I haven't watched NASCAR with ANY kind of regularity since at least 8 years ago.

Too many races, too many Ovals, not nearly enough Road courses, too many rules changes.

Go back to Winston Cup rules. Keep the Monster girls though.

Im ok with Mustang being there, though its a big ass green house for a coupe lol.

Wish they would get rid of the the "Stages" they use now.
That was the single worst move NASCAR has done. Absolutely positively ruined the sport.

I guess I'm one of the few that actually likes the Stages. Particularly at superspeedways, I got tired of watching guys just ride around in the back, or just ride around in line until the final 25 laps. Stage racing has created much more competitive activity throughout the early & mid race portions. Hell, if you go to a grassroots dirt track even they do it in heats.

another new thing I'm excited about is the Roval race coming up in a few weeks. I've always said I wish NASCAR needed more road racing, and this is a move to give us a little more. Now if we could get more short tracks and less 1.5 mile ovals.

not at my post...
Hell they ruined it when they mandated that you had to basically run the same car with the same engine. Bring back the Super Birds and Talladegas.

it'd be helluva a lot more exciting if they had to bring a factory race car/chassis like copo camaros, cj mustang, challenger etc...something along those lines, body-in-white car.....like what the Aussies do with sports car racing, touring etc...

Takes all the fun out of it when they KNOW when they can pit. What a joke.

It was all about a game of skill, strategy, and chance.
