Fingers crossed. The house is literally 500’ from the beach. It would seriously suck if it gets destroyed.
Growing up my back yard was marsh. We had a dock that I used to go crabbing.

Things there can and do flood, but the homes are normally built with this in mind.

Good thing you haven’t closed yet

Amen. I was just about to sign off on flood/wind/hail policies, as well as finalize the lending. Guess I’ll hold off for a week or two. Sucks, I can only imagine—the current homeowners have just repaired a bunch of things

Binding authority is restricted Im sure now. You can't add or change any sort of coverage in any area in its path.

Do you really think anyone in the government thinks about anything logically? Watch the news for highways full of abandoned cars.
Add in the naivete of people, and now you have an even larger catastrophe.

As Dave Mustaine said in the song Stairway to the Wall on the White Album in 1959, "Sad but True."

Logistics aren't usually thought of in terms of government decisions. Seems like a "lean back and stretch before leaving the office early" decision to me.

Step 1: Do it
Step 2: It's Done

I also think it's sad that the news had to put out PSAs stating "DO NOT evacuate to an impact area." Seriously, if someone is dumb enough to evacuate TOWARDS the hazard, they're a certified idiot.

Best of luck to you all that are in the path of this thing. Be safe, evacuate if you need to. Seal all your cars into water proof bags.

Also, if you can figure out a way to send you r water out west, we need some in Phoenix. :D :D :D

Those who are in the direct path have no legit reasons for staying. This has been in the news since Saturday where it would make landfall. Even elderly have options for evacuating, and they are about the hardest and most vulnerable to move. Your possessions are not as important as your life.

People who stay put not only their lives in danger, but first responders who will be the ones trying to rescue you.

If you choose to stay, you have elected to stay on your own. There is no 911. There will not be anyone there to help. This is a choice that anyone who stays should know.

There are a few that have to stay in regard to a sworn duty. There are some that will choose to stay. There will be those that head into the storm, hunker down, and plan to help with recovery.

All ultimately have a choice, but they need to have everything possible thought out before riding a storm such as this out.

SHOUT OUT to Levi (owner and admin of tropicatidbits), one of the TropCyclone Wizards at FSU. He's currently operating on cat naps every few hours and it looks like he'll continue doing so until at the very least the weekend.

The rain->flooding->landslides will cause tons of damage inland, and the storm surge will reek havoc on the coast; the NHC is forecasting up to 13feet of storm surge in some locations, and if it is timed correctly with the tides, very bad news.

NOAA's wavewatch3 model is showing significant wave heights of 15m associated with the eyewall of the storm. That means that there is potential for 100foot+ waves....

Eyewall replacement cycles are becoming more regular, the eye has decreased in size, outflow is becoming better defined, the storm is slowing down, entering a weaker shear area, higher sea surface temps, and better outflow environment... All of these things are bad news.

From NHC 5pm EDT advisory
At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of the eye of Hurricane
Florence was located by satellite near latitude 27.5 North,
longitude 67.1 West. Florence is moving toward the west-northwest
near 17 mph (28 km/h). A motion toward the west-northwest and
northwest is expected through early Thursday. Florence is expected
to slow down considerably by late Thursday into Friday. On the
forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the
southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas through
Wednesday, and approach the coast of North Carolina or South
Carolina in the hurricane warning area on Thursday and Friday.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 140 mph (220 km/h)
with higher gusts. Florence is a category 4 hurricane on the
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Further strengthening is
forecast tonight and Wednesday. While some weakening is expected on
Thursday, Florence is forecast to be an extremely dangerous major
hurricane through landfall.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles
(280 km).

DO NOT GAMBLE WITH MOTHER NATURE. Button up and leave, as soon as possible. If you've been looking for that excuse to go to Vegas, now is the time.

Does anyone know how evac works? Not everyone who is evacuating has the funds ready to stay at a hotel for a while. There can't be enough evac centers to house ~1M people.

Just curious how the logistics work there.
What part of the process do you want to know more about? I can shed some insight into the process, as I am involved in these types of events.

In a simplified manner, individuals that do not have the financial means to evacuate will go to an evacuation center within their city/county/parish. Once there, basic information is collected (typically just name and home of record), and said individuals are checked into a database, banded depending on the system the state government uses, and will then be bussed or flown to shelters in non-impact areas. Their stay at the shelter will vary, ranging from a few days, to weeks, to months. However, while there they will receive meals at no cost, and basic items in which they might be lacking/missing. Transportation, once the impacted area is clear, is provided to them as well to their home of record.
