When the stock ECU isn’t enough?

Hey guys,

So I have a question regarding upgrading the ECU and when it’s necessary or appropriate to do so. Basically it’s (Stock ECU + Lean protection module and Vampire knock kit) VS Haltech 2500 Elite.

I currently have a lean protection module and plug n play vampire knock kit from J&S (both new and uninstalled) but am looking at a deal on a plug in play Haltech 2500 elite.

Basically, my question is would I be good running the protection I currently have and the stock ECU or should I be looking at the standalone option more heavily?

The car will be a fully built machine (built motor, 2.65, e85, all the big boy supporting mods) and the only thing I was really trying to retain was the plug n play factor and not splice or rewrite the entire car. I’d like to not skimp on the last bit of the build and have to do it again when I have the capability to just have it done now.

I’ve seen Malcom comment somewhere about the Haltech saying that would be his option because it can run the factory cluster and gauges vs needing a little screen. I’m inclined to agree and that’s why I’d love some input on what you think is appropriate for my build.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

other than the dash issue, i'd recommend holley. i tried a very early haltech and megasquirt...both with undesirable results.

the holley just worked.

All depends how high you want to rev it. If you want to go past 7k an aftermarket ecu is basically the only option. You're playing with fire trying to rev past that on stock ecu. But built motor with "only" a 2.6 it might not make a ton of power past 7k anyways.

You can get the stock cluster to work on any aftermarket ecu you just have to piggyback the stock ecu with the required sensors/etc. I'm currently in the process of installing aftermarket ecu but I'm making everything from scratch, didn't want a "plug and Play" because I'm hiding all wiring necessary so nothing from the stock harness I wanted to reuse. However a plug and play like halltech and holley is a much easier way to do it. Nothing wrong with halltech it's a huge name. Only one I would stay away from would be megasquirt as their stuff is very confusing.
