So earlier this year I got my motorcycle license and I promptly went out and bought a new Harley Iron 883. My buddy has owned one for a few years and he’s really enjoyed it, and honesty it’s pretty intimidating to go test ride bikes on a fresh license so I went with what I knew. I’ve added a couple things (exhaust, intake, tuner) as the year went on and really enjoyed the Harley overall. Overall it was a fun year and I thought the Harley was a good fit for me. Until this weekend. I visited family for Christmas and my dads friend let me borrow his BMW S1000R for a few days. Holy moly that bike is amazing. It does every single thing better than the Harley as I suppose it should. It feels like a part of my spine when cornering, accelerates harder than anything I’ve ever experienced, and really is just like a shot of adrenaline every time you do anything on it. The clutchless quickshifter is super cool too. So the question is....how can I convince my wife I “need” two bikes?
Here’s a pic of the bike I now “need”!

Do a 1250 big bore in the sportster. The xlforum has tons of guys running 10s and 9s on sportsters

I got an s1000rr and yes it is night and day compared to the night rod special. Night rod felt like a truck on the highway that just wants to go straight. The s1000rr feels like a a 720s. Better at everything performance wise.

It’s a beast for sure. And for what you want to do on it, sounds like your mind is made up. Just execute your plan lol
But. I loved my sporty and for less than $500 I had it the way I wanted it. And imo, looks better. But I’m biased

The problem is you have the 883. I had a Nightster and am looking at grabbing another one up. They have the 1200 and when teamed with an intake, exhaust, and tune are quite fun. I also had a full Progressive 412 suspension.

883 ~ 50 hp
1200 ~ 70 hp
S1000R ~ 160 hp. That doesn't even address the braking and cornering differences. If you want that S1000R, Harley doesn't have anything that would satisfy that desire.

It's like comparing apples to oranges... but honestly for the money the S1000RR is the best bang for the buck. I had a 2012 and I'm going to be getting the 2019 soon. For a liter bike they are very compliant and predictable, and the electronics on them are just phenomenal. My advice would be yes.. buy the damn thing lol but check out a reputable riding school such as Yamahas champions riders school. Harley actually sends their engineers there to learn some thing in regards to riding! You'll get the most out of the bike knowing a thing or two!! PS if you rode it in sport or race mode... your in for a ride in slick mode lol

you really can't compare the 2 bikes. Sell the Harley and don't look back. I'm looking into getting a gentle used ducati scrambler right now as a second bike to commute on.
My 1299 Panigale isn't a great stuck in traffic bike..Lol

That sucks, people on this board love to shit on cali. But one of the best things is you can lane split. I'm never stuck in traffic. EVER.

I was going to pull the trigger on a 1299 Pani S. The guy was moving to wisconsin. I realized the bike does not have heated grips. That threw the duc out of the window. Aside from looks I found the RR way more comfortable. I know it gets colder in RI, but I rode this morning to work, it was about 40F. Heated grips FTW!!

I rode my buddies RR when we went to the tale of the dragon this year. It was comfortable, but the sound of my "L" twin matched up with the full titanium Akrapovic race system.. No comparison. Plus it looks like pure sex.lol

I just put my Michelin Rs tire's on mine and tbh 40* is too dangerous to corner. anything below 50 and I'm out. So heated grips on a sportbike isn't my selling point

Reliability and the heated grips is what sold me for sure. I check craigslist everyday and always notice a high mileage RR for sale, right now the highest I've seen had 91k miles before the motor was replaced. The maintenance is more than a jpn bike. But I think reliability is up there with them too.

I don’t think I would get rid of the sportster. I enjoy cruising around with my wife on board and I doubt she will want to be a passenger on the BMW. I totally appreciate they are two entirely different worlds. I appreciate all the replies. And I did looked at the fxdr, not impressed. It honestly felt really wide just sitting on it. The ergonomics were just not up to the level of the S1000R in my opinion.

The owner told me today he’ll sell it for 12k. Seem like a great deal. The bike is a 2018 with 250 miles on it and from what I can tell it has every available option. What do you guys think of that price?
