Why did Shelby name it a Cobra?

Didn’t he have his hand in the Viper too. I wonder if he helped come up with the name Viper. Maybe he likes snakes. IMO they are cool names (Cobra and Viper) with Viper edging out Cobra barely.

He did help design the viper which actually looks very snake like, as it should.

The reason I ask is because I'm about 98% sure I'm going to delete the sideskirts and ditch all of the external cobra stuff (bumpers, badges). I was looking for a reason to keep it all but haven't found any.

Pretty much when I'm done (unless I change my mind) the car will just look like a really clean sn95 mustang unless you see the gauge cluster or what is under the hood.

Common answer is that it came to him in a dream. Maybe he was dreaming about the snake bite, who knows. Ford later got the rights to use the name on the mustangs and keep it going. GT350/500s were never called Cobras.

Not true.

Cobra's and GT350/500s were sold at the same time so the GT350/500 could not be called a Cobra. OBTW some don't like the idea that Shelby gave Cobra name rights to Ford and then Ford used it on the Mustang.

See below for an advertisement from the day. Clearly he called them Cobras to some extent.

First thing you learn about Shelby, is never make an absolute statement about his cars. This was a Ford ad and by that time Shelby was busy with GT40 race team and Ford was more in control of Shelbys. The gas cap slso had the words Shelby Cobra.

That is where all the controversy comes in. Die hard, you better not call my Shelby GT500 a cobra or I will beat you around the head and shoulder about it, say it was a Ford thing that never made it into the the final product. Others who are not so snittish about it point out that the name Terminator also never made it into the final product yet everyone uses that terminology. Myself I could care less what you want to call mine. Many have called mine a Cobra, I just smile and say thanks.

Well, we can always rehash what a "real" Shelby is.

I love my Shelby. I would never call it a Cobra though. BTW, does this widebody make my butt look fat? :D
