In need of a truck or suv w/ 4WD, 20 mpg or better, that can pull a 17' boat (It's a multi-purpose boat. You can fish or ski from it). I have a 60 mile commute to work one way. No kids and not married.

Budget is about $20K +/- $3K.

What would you guys recommend?

Friend of mine used to pull an aluminum boat like that with his Tacoma with no problems. It wasn't 4wd though. I think the 20mpg is going to be the hard point.

Salvaged 15 F150 2.7 EcoBoost. 4x4 should do what you want in your price range.

If you have never driven an Excursion, but want an SUV tht can comfortably haul 8 people and pull 12,000 trailers like its a Radio Flyer look into a 7.3 Excursion 4x4.

I have a 2001 Excursion but chose the V10 with 4:30 gears for ease of maintenance and a more familiar engine architecture.

The V10 is a great engine. Definitely under appreciated for its reliability. Needs some horsepower help to keep up these days, but exhaust, intake and a tune and they wake up pretty well. I'd buy the V10 over the similar year 5.4 any day of the week.

Its been a fantastic addition to my "fleet" lol. My GF has a big family and its not uncommon for 6-8 people to go on an adventure, or shopping or movies etc. They all travel in comfort. Moved a few pieces of furniture with ease too.

When I got it I replaced all 10 spark plugs with Motorcraft as well as other maintenance items. Smoothest running engine Ive driven. I feel very fortunate I found this particular Excursion. Its the color and power train I wanted in 4x4. Had 131K miles on it with extensive dealer maintenance for the vast majority of its life.

I absolutely love my Excursion!

Looks like I'll be looking for a used Tacoma. Wont get the gas mileage but reliability factor, resale value and the fact I don't need a full size truck are the big selling points.
