Well, the adventure has already started, so I guess I might as well start a thread on my second save. I'm going to post this really quick, and save the next few response spots so it stays organized. Ill start building it today, while loading up pics and what not.

Cheers!

It's almost hard to find a place to start. It was such a whirl wind of craziness that lead up to buying, then going to get the car. The car was sold Thursday afternoon, and after 5 hours of deliberation, the original buyer backed out of the sale over a few hundred dollars. That meant that I owned the car, and didn't have much time to get things sorted, and go get it.

With 2 days to get ready to leave, I pressed nearly everyone I knew about being a co-pilot. Unfortunately with such short notice, I couldn't dig anyone up. 3000 miles in 3 days was going to suck alone, but it was my only choice at that point. I packed a few pillows, a blanket, a change of clothes, and headed out the door Saturday night.

This is Saturday night, at 10:30. Topped her off with some 93, just for good luck, and headed south.

I made it from central maine to the south side of CT, heading into NY, before I hit the snow/ice storm I was trying to avoid. Even at 3am, there was a ton of traffic, and everyone was driving like an idiot. Before I got hit by someone, I decided to pull off the highway for a few hours. I found a Target parking lot and slept there for a few hours.

Took some pics through PA on my way to visit my cousin in Waynesboro. Had nice traveling and some nice area to cover. And it was nice to see ground that was trying to look green, instead of snow everywhere!

And boy was there some caffeine consumed on this trip. I think my kidneys are still plotting against me after this trip. The ole Limited 6.2 was drinking fuel, and I was slamming monster.

MMMMMM FUEL!!!! Lots of this consumed! 274 gallons total.

Burn%20GT500%2048_zpsr2f3ecua.jpg

As much night driving was done as I could handle too. A lot easier to maneuver the highways with a trailer when its empty.

Monday:
Early morning Monday I managed to drive within 3 hours of the Copart yard before my eyes gave out on me. Found this lovely, not freaky at all, old gas station to park in. I rolled my shirts up in the truck windows here, as I didn't really want to wake up to some homeless guy staring at me. Luckily I was left alone for the 4 hours I was there.

Burn%20GT500%2055_zpsl1rzzq3o.jpg

Around 9:30 Monday morning, I was in the Copart yard. Exhausted, but pretty amped to see the car finally. Nervous that it might be worse than the few pics I had of it may had lead me to believe.

Burn%20GT500%2057_zpsa9xg0bjn.jpg

Before too long she came out on the forks of a bucket loader, and was placed on my trailer, so I could get her strapped down and ready for the long ride home.

Burn%20GT500%2059_zpsqaxmpe3c.jpg

The inside was basically perfect, besides some cleaning that would be needed. There is a little smell in the interior, but its pretty faint. The cluster will need to be pulled and inspected too, as there is some discoloring in the outer lenses. I'm hoping its just smoke damage, and not a burnt cluster from voltage back feed or something.

Corsa exhaust of some kind.

Burn%20GT500%2063_zpsiqpsac4e.jpg

The underside looks like it should. No rust or anything hiding anywhere, as it is a southern bell.

Burn%20GT500%2064_zpserj0qypb.jpg

And the engine bay. It looks awful, but after some digging when I was loading it, and more once I got back, its very very light damage. Here are the bay pics I took while loading the car.

Burn%20GT500%2066_zpsnlekzan4.jpg

Passenger side engine harness. As you can see, its just the tape a loom that got burned up. The wires underneath are still coated, and look fine. I'm replacing everything anyways, but its nice to see that it didn't get that hot over all.

Burn%20GT500%2067_zpsi51qnu7n.jpg

Burn%20GT500%2067_zpsi51qnu7n.jpg

Aftermarket idler.

Burn%20GT500%2068_zpsdcltgjfi.jpg

And this is the corner where all the action happened. The radiator support is tore up from the fire department attempting to get under the hood. But the wires show a pretty clear story. All the lower wires are bare, with all the coating burnt off them. But chase the wires a little ways across the nose, and you can see that a lot of it is still intact. This makes me pretty certain that the issue wasn't from the car itself, but from something sitting in front of the car. I also believe that this means the car overall didn't get very hot either. Something for fuel or flammable liquid was burning around the car, and caught the car on fire.

Burn%20GT500%2069_zpsfadggpwb.jpg

The passenger side didn't get very warm at all. Washer jug is intact still, and even the headlight appears to be untouched.

Burn%20GT500%2070_zpsjmuavvaz.jpg

Strapped down and ready for the long trip home! At this point I'm pretty happy with the car and the purchase. Everything for damage looks light, and I'm much less concerned about the health of the engine itself too. Even the pulleys were spinning freely, and the blower turns really easily too. Again, I think a light quick fire is all we are looking at.

The gas station just up the road from the Copart yard. Time for a stock up on energy drinks and some fresh gas for the way home. Kinda wished I had bottled more of their warm weather up to bring home.

Burn%20GT500%2072_zpscdopumsu.jpg

This is where I stood at the gas station, for the trip home. I set a second trip for fuel mileage reasons on the way back. Did pretty well with the trailer on the way down, but with the car, and all those mountains to climb, I was curious what the ole 6.2 would do on the way back.

Burn%20GT500%2073_zpsdw5ptttk.jpg

Of course and outdated Nav unit in my truck meant that my turns got messed up when I was outside Atlanta. That mistake cost me 2 hours in traffic, and a longer route for the trip home. Yay! 9 lanes of gridlock, idiot drivers, and a big ass trailer behind me. What fun!!!

Not far outside Atlanta, I ended up figuring out that I had light problems with my trailer, and that one of the tires wasn't going to make the trip home. I found a goodyear store after some searching, and they helped me with a new tire. And a few trips into an Autozone, and I ended up with working lights on the trailer. The blinkers wouldn't come to life no matter what I tried though. Another trip into AZ and I had myself some magnetic lights to server as blinkers at the very least. Heavy traffic and no blinkers = no fun.

This was at a gas station in one of the Carolina's. I never looked at the good parts of the exterior of the car, and grabbed some pics with a nice sunset in the background.

I drove into the night for a while, and stopped in a lowes somewhere in Virginia for a few hours rest. After the sunrise, I stopped for a break and some fuel.

The hills were pretty impressive in this area, and unfortately don't come out in pics very well, but the 6.2 was chugging up them pretty well.

Pit stop in western mass, heading to Worcester. Last leg of the trip, as I was only another 4 or 5 hours from home at this point. My friend who bid on this car for me, and helped me do the white Shelby, actually drove by heading south, and caught a glimpse of the car going by. Had we planned better we could have met, and he could have seen the car in person.

Burn%20GT500%20100_zpsoszlzzuz.jpg

Gas and more gas. Second to last stop on the open road here.

Burn%20GT500%20102_zpsl6pomu8q.jpg

And the last stop on the way home! Topped her off just a mile from my house, so I could see what the exact trip was. She's almost home!!!!

Burn%20GT500%20106_zpsdbygjro1.jpg

Here is the trip total for the whole shebang. Quite a bit of hours driving, that's for sure!

Burn%20GT500%20104_zpsrb4s09pr.jpg

And here is the trip back and the mileage she got.

Burn%20GT500%20105_zpsvkzb9mef.jpg

The next morning. And possibly the only time shes had frost on her.

It took me a few days to catch up to life in general at this point. The trip took 74 hours down and back, and 50 was in the truck running and driving. That and I slept in the damn thing too, so I was ready to be done with vehicles for a few days.

I had to have the garage plowed out, as I haven't been using it this winter so far. After it was cleared, my stepson and I headed over to unload the car into the garage. We grabbed a wheel off the T-bird we have to get it to roll off the trailer. After we swapped the tire, we found the trailer was missing a ramp. I had made the whole trip down there without a way to load the car. Thank god they dropped her on the trailer for me!

Front drivers wheel shot. You can see the body harness is trashed. The struts and springs and everything will get swapped out of her. After we but the tires on, we found the front brakes to be locked up. Not sure if there is pressure locked in the brake system, not letting the wheels turn? I know the drivers side rubber boots were probably melted to the rotor, maybe even the wheel bearing was baked dry and seized.

Looks cool with a big bullet wheel....

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand more engine bay pics. Here you can see the front of the blower cleaned up a little bit. I grabbed some brake clean and a rage and was curious how the case would look. It cleaned up really well. I'm happy it does.

You can see in this pic that it melted the intake tube, but the rubber coupler is still pretty much intact.

Burn%20GT500%20120_zpsn7iskbat.jpg

When you pull the old intake tub off, you can see the light colored coil cover under it is still pretty straight. It even left the letter imprints in the plastic, and a pic tool pulled a bunch of the burnt plastic off pretty easily too.

Engine bay p0rn, if you're into that messed up kind...

Burn%20GT500%20126_zpsz8bq2ppp.jpg

Even some brake clean on the passenger side valve cover showed more blue paint.

Burn%20GT500%20129_zpsilw1ad7c.jpg

One cheap battery for sale. Probably only putting out 3 or 4 volts at this point though.

Burn%20GT500%20131_zpstr6amilx.jpg

Firewall pad is still there too. Brake booster even operates as it should, even though the master is shot.

Burn%20GT500%20132_zpsnzot2qgr.jpg

Wiper cowl got warm, but the wiper transmission and bushings look to be intact still.

Burn%20GT500%20134_zpshva0cez5.jpg

Radiator carnage. All that will have to go. Nothing good to see here.

Sub'n.

Underhood damage doesn't look bad at all considering it was on fire. Lucked out with those wires!

Subscribing. Very cool to try and save her. My bro bought a fired damaged 2004 Cobra motor in 2005 that looked very similar. New cam covers, refinished blower and it’s still going strong in his car to this day!
What’s the plan?
Good luck!

This is brilliant. Loving your dedication and dream of one day doing a project car: this looks ambitious but the more you share the more I can see how possible it is to bring the beasty back to life. I’m following everywhere you’re posting!

I have a soft spot with this one as I have one of the 596 black, with red stripe, 13/14s built

I’d take a project on like that.

Looks like a lot of work, but I’d definitely do it given the entry price.
