Easy math riddle... Or is it?

Some may know that my father and I run some DQs out in NH. I was discussing this hypothetical question to him to get him going. Saw some great discussion on my FB, so I wanted to share it here




DQ riddle:

A customer steals a $100 bill out of my register. The customer then gets in line and purchases $30 in products with the stolen bill. We hand him $70 in change back.

How much, as a business, are we short?

$170
$200

I'd it's anything like my FB, we will get all different answers!

The $100 he stole
The $30 in product
The $70 you gave him
$200 in the whole

On second thought $100

Ignore the $100 bill, it's back in the register. You basically just gave him $30 in product and $70 cash. You're out $100.

How short is the cash register at the end of the night?

He steals $100.
Then he gives you $100 back.
The DQ hands him $30 worth of product and $70.
Youre out $70 plus your cost of the $30 in products.
You lose maybe $80-$85 bucks total.

Register would be $100 short but you’d be out the 100 minus your profit margin on the $30 of delicious blizzards... I think. Hell I dunno

It’s either $170 or $200

It's actually more than $200 but that's the largest amount OP listed.

Because this. Depending on the businesses profit margin, it could cost many hundreds to replace the stolen product and cash.

I'm not sure I would spend hundreds of dollars to recoup the stolen hunnit.

However we do have a state of the art surveillance system but that's more of an indirect cost.


I'm talking more direct than that

The answer is $100. 100+100-30-70=100

Of course there are other factors in play, but that is the simple answer.

$70 from the register. $100 from the store, assuming the $30 in stuff is a total loss amount.

How much did the item originally cost the company and what was the mark up on it? That and sales tax should be factored in
