IRS conversion - for real

Real simple question. Do the things in the red circles offer ANY actual benefit for structural rigidity on an IRS car? I want to cut them out. The blue boxes are what the IRS uses, i will never go live axle again, and the IRS will tie the frame rails together (plus im stitch welding everything). Cutting weight and getting some working room for maintenance etc. I think this will save 5-10 lbs.

I’m not an engineer but it looks like those pieces sort of triangulate the top brace to the frame rails. It looks like you could “trim” them down a little and still keep the structural integrity. That’s my two cents.

no, subframe bolts where the blue boxes are. i figure that in a live axle car where you have nothing tying all this together and you need those top two points for the top 2 of the factory 4 link maybe in that case its structural but in this case I've got a robust subframe connecting the two framerails that is vastly superior to anything those spot welded pieces might provide.

I'm also going to connect the trunk shock towers to one another after I reinforce those as well.
I'm just not wanting to hang on to anything vestigial that serves no purpose except to get in the way since I will never ever ever ever go back to live axle.

That’s sounds like a good plan. I wasn’t thinking about what you were going to put in its place. That would probably provide plenty of strength. But again I’m no engineer.

I swapped an IRS into my 91 coupe with the exact same plan .
I trimmed those parts you have in red , found no structural problem .

They're just spot welded in anyway, pop them out. Ppl who do serious SRA builds weld the shit out of them with extra material because they are known to crack.

the subframe had hangers (4 actually) but since I'm not running extremely hot exhaust right under a differential that already has a hard time staying cool I cut them off.

There are two hangers which are bolted to the brackets I intend to remove but the idea I have for the exhaust probably won't need to extend that far to the rear so I will be ditching those as well.

I'm trying to save as much weight as possible. a little here a little there all adds up over time.

Yes, I know. The IRS subframe has the hangers for the tailpipes, but Where do the brackets for the muffler hangers bolt to? See the answer below.....
