Thanks for the kind words.

And I wanted to note that I wrote Ryan and asked for his recommendation of fluids for a long and healthy aluminum radiator life. He wrote back...

Ryan said:
Generally the best coolant is a mixture distilled water/coolant anywhere between 70/30 to 50/50 respectively. Making sure to isolate the radiator in rubber mounts so that there is never a metal to metal contact is a good way to help increase the life of a radiator.

Thanks,

Bruno, I think I have it figured out. You never get back to 100% and learn to accept the fact that as the years go by that percentage continually decreases. I'm lucky though. The Cleveland Clinic gave me the best outcome possible. I was surrounded by some fantastic people. And as doped up I was on Fentanyl (and everything else you could imagine) I was tended to by the finest young ladies to ever wear a nurses uniform. They just kept showing up, one after another and it was hard to be in pain when surrounded with such beauty, and that includes my lovely wife who was there every moment of the way. George from MGW flew to Cleveland to see me and bust my balls.

Worst parts of the whole thing? The ****ing breathing tube. The moment I woke up I wanted that out immediately. You can't talk and breathing is difficult. It feels like you are being choked. A guy came in and twice said I wasn't awake enough for them to pull it out. The third time I opened my eyes wider than Marty Feldman ever could and stared at him. They finally pulled it. Second to that, the ****ing catheter. They inflate a ball at the end of it so it doesn't come out. The hose is way larger in diameter than you'd ever believe. There were three or so nurses doing shit to me and one of them got tangled in the catheter line and tripped backwards, yanking my junk from the inside out. I could have bitten through a 1/2" rebar no problem. After that, I held that tube with all my might when the staff got near it. And the day it came out I had the cutest girl in the world do it so I did my best to roll with it and not complain.

You got tubes in your stomach draining flesh and goop into a machine. Wires coming out of your chest attached to your heart in case they have to give you a jolt or two. I battled with AFib and thankfully it stopped. There's a cluster of tubes coming out of your neck that was extremely bothersome. IV's in each arm. Constant blood draws and checks, sometimes hourly. They gave me pills constantly. The opioids make it so you can't shit and that becomes a problem. I woke up with my right hand being completely numb and it hasn't gone away - I admit that scares me as much as the heart stuff. If it doesn't come back that'll be a major adjustment. And my vision took a complete shit. They keep your brain alive with a machine while your heart is stopped and I sense something got lost in the translation there.

But hey, having the surgery done sure beats the alternative. People that die from a brain or heart aneurysm is a God awful way to go. I feel like the Reaper took a shot at me and won't be giving up soon. So I'm ok never getting back to 100% as long as I can fight that bastard off with one hand.

Incredible story Tob. Prayers to you and yours. The numbing hand thing would drive me nuts too. Very, very strange.

Here's to a speedy and 100% recovery.

Thanks man. I start cardiac rehab tomorrow. A bunch of old farts on treadmills, stationary bikes, and little 2lb dumbells. Hopefully none of them blows a diaper out while I'm there. Gotta somehow get this hand thing fixed because I have a lot of work to do on the Fox.

Don't forget the simple word and matching games they give them to make sure they're maintaining some minimal brain function.

Best of luck with the recovery.

Just an update. The weather finally broke around here (we actually hit 60*!) so I finally exited my home and got a few things done that are related to the cooling system upgrade I'm doing.

I purchased a replacement Ford Contour twin fan assembly, made brackets for it to mount it to the body instead of the radiator, and fit up an upper radiator AN hose assembly. In the overall picture progress is very small but that's the way I'm attacking this car, slow but (somewhat) steady. Some shots to illustrate...

My favorite new tool - a rivnut gun. Much quicker than welding nuts in place, etc.

I finally fit together an upper hose assembly using Earl's AN fittings and some braided hose from Summit Racing.

I set the radiator in place on some new rubber insulators from LRS on the bottom and used a LRS prebent anodized and bent aluminum sheet hold down up top. Hose fit perfectly. Nice and low such that the radiator cap is the high point in the system - the way it should be and perfect for purging any air that shouldn't be in there.

The Contour twin fan assembly is attached to some aluminum brackets I fabbed up that allow it to attach to the body on each end. The fans are heavier than you'd think and I wanted to keep the weight off of the radiator.

Anyway, the goal of clean simplicity marches forward. When I see a stockish Fox car I cringe at all the garbage that clutters up what could and should be a good looking, tidy, engine bay. Long way to go as baby steps and a turtle's pace at least give me time to think things through instead of racing to completion, however hasty. More in ten years or so.

Nothing can hold you down man.

Good work, you aren't supposed to be building a show car, stop making it so pretty!

In hindsight, these cars were awful. So it's hard not to change everything beyond the shell. So far I've done just that and am really enjoying it.

I'll try not to make it too pretty.
:)

How's your right hand doing, Tob?

First off, points for paying attention. It's a Wallerian Degeneration that doesn't want to go away. I'm adjusting to not being able to use it but it makes simple things in life a bit of a challenge. It is frustrating when working on the car trying to do everything with my left hand. To be more succinct, it really sucks. I was back in the hospital a couple of weeks ago for a couple of days for a Pleural Effusion (who comes up with these names?) and that was a setback. I lost 12 lbs in 3 days, 24 lbs since my heart surgery and I wasn't looking to lose weight. Just trying to enjoy every moment I don't have a tube or needle stuck in me and to be thankful to be able to work on some really shitty automobiles.

I don't know how I missed this thread...I need to get around more. I know we talked briefly in another thread about yer heart surgery, but I'm glad to see that yer able to get back to ****in' with the car.

Sorry to hear about the hand and the pleural effusion...hopefully you won't have to deal with either for much longer.

That engine looks fantastic! And I'll keep prayin' for ya.

Wallerian degeneration eh? The usual answer is the regen takes about a millimeter a day. Grab the tape measure and do the math.
On the positive side, no right hand needed with the DCT :) Too soon?

Nah, it's all good J. I can handle it.

I'm familiar with the "1 mm per day" and my understanding is that is to be preceeded with "up to" and that grafts might be necessary.
