He USED my videos immensely. He even shared them with other teams around the state and region. Also he gave copies to other people and college scouts. But again I learned a tough lesson today

cease and desist letter, copyright infringement, if permission wasn't given and used personal equipment.

But probably all know how this story ends... Live and learn. Sry, bud.

Also I would have settled for him just paying me for the time to film and upload the games for this year alone which would have been under $2,000.00 but he won't even respond to me.

I just gave him a list of what I had did for the three years. I was only wanting paid for this past season.

I only asked for a fraction. Basically what it cost me for this year. That is why I gave him a discount. Basically pay me for filming but not the mileage and ticket purchases.

I agree. As I said above I was only asking for a fraction. Basically what I had done for this year. Coach will not even contact me about it. He knows what he did and how he put one over on me. Got me to do all the work and he took all the glory.

I could be being picky, but I feel like this contradicts each other.

You say you would've settled for him only paying this year, which leads me to believe you asked for more...

Then below you say that you provided him with 3 years of work and only asked for payment on 1 of them at a discounted rate.

Consider it charity work for your school and move TF on with your life. Why are you even thinking this is a big deal? Get over it!

That's a bit harsh... I think given the same circumstances, I'd lose a little sleep and regret not pursuing payment a few years earlier too.

Man, Michael, that sucks. Reading through your last post, it appears that the coach did not have the authority to let you video tape for a fee in the first place. So the school is likely out of the picture now. I'm not an attorney, but if anything you'd maybe have to try to sue him personally. I don't see it ending well for you financially, what with attorney fee's added on if you don't get a judgement in your favor. Is there a reason why you didn't send the school/coach a bill after the first year of video taping?

I'm confused by something you posted. You said your daughter played on the high school varsity team for 7 years. Was that a typo?

Michael, I hope things turn in your favor (positively) going forward. As far as contract stuff, avoid verbal agreements and insist on a formal, written contract.

You said your daughter played on the high school varsity team for 7 years. Was that a typo? Nope not a typo. In KY you can play up in basketball. She actually was on the team for 8 years. She practiced in the 5th grade but was too small to play. Actually played on the Varsity from the 6th grade on. She was really good but the coach back stabbed her in the back just like he did me when he wanted me to do the filming. Always told us she would have a full ride scholarship to play D1 or D2 basketball. He made sure she got neither. But that is OK. She says she is done with him and doesn't have to see him any more. Now she can concentrate on being a nurse or a dental hygienist.

The reason that I did not send the bill after the first year was to help with costs. I just really wanted to be paid for the filming for this year. It is why I discounted the bill so much.

Coach has lied to a lot of people over the years. I found out the hard way what others had said when I defended him. I helped put on 3 car shows for him to raise money. We sold hot dogs. We sold flowers and ferns. We sold women's 31 accessories. We helped do it all. But when it came down to compensating me it was, Who are you? Live and learn to live another day. Thanks for your comments.

I am. I also have done a lot of "charity work" for the school and the basketball team for the last 7 years. I really only asked to be paid for this year. I did a lot of background work that he had no clue or no ability to do.

I've been in a similar predicament before. You try the be the nice guy and expect that others have the same mentality.

Guys you will not believe this. I filmed my daughter's graduation last Friday night. Seems to me the TV station that was supposed to only showed up for a few minutes and left. Someone saw my camera up on the second floor filming. Now everyone is wanting a copy of the video that I shot. Even the Principal's wife is asking all over for a copy of it. I got a call from my niece after my wife saw it posted on Facebook. She said people are wanting copies. Yet no monetary fee was discussed. I thought about charging $20.00 a disc since any time we have had to pay for school function pics it was $25.00 per disc. Pathetic. Same ones who said they could not help me with the coach now are wanting me to donate my time to them. SMH

I'd be pulling the videos and then just moving along. No sense in making stress out of nothing.

LOL. Karma for them.

Great opportunity to demonstrate to your daughter and the others what class looks like and offer to duplicate it onto a flash drive for free if they come by with one (at your convenience, of course). It won't get you anything but it will sure let everyone know that you are not at all like the dick you tried to deal with. And that's a win.

When you initially entered the handshake agreement with the coach, was it agreed upon that you would be paid? Or was it later when the principal mentioned you should be compensated?

Why wouldn't I believe that? That's typical human behavior. Be prepared for a swarm of ticks and leeches with any implication or assumption of "Free."

There are entire websites devoted to taking advantages of "free" offers. No joke. They're called churners.

I bet I could become rich by creating an outdoor theater, labeling it as "Free" and only playing ads, raking in profits on ad revenue. Because it's "Free," it'd be packed 24/7. Isn't that how Youtube works?

I don’t buy this for a second. It’s not entirely on the coaching staff to shop your kid around. Part of it is on you. But how did he prevent her from getting one? If he didn’t help at all how could he have hurt her. This makes no sense.

Guess my community was way more generous than most growing up. If anyone recorded it was shared for "free". Including graduation video too.

Just share it and move on. If money is an issue then ask for them to provide the storage material(USB/DVD/ETC).

Sounds to me you set yourself up for this by not creating a chain of proof. Should have had it in writing or at least text/email

I want to know the answer to this too. Based on what you have said, it seems you indicated it would be free when talking to the coach but then the principal said you should be paid, so you just assumed you would. Did you actually talk to the coach after the principal said that to see if he knew you were to be paid?

Maybe the principal and the coach were not on the same page about it. Seems a little haphazard to just work for 3 years and then assume your getting paid. Did you bring it up at all prior to the end of the 3 years?
