I recently had the MGW Gen 2 shifter installed on my 12’ GT500 PP w/ 18K miles. It was installed by a local trusted transmission shop as I didn’t have the space to do it myself. I definitely noticed an improvement in the length of throw, however, 2nd gear grind still exists although it is somewhat better. In addition, I’ve found some odd grinding in other gears, most commonly 4th which I didn’t have before. There’s been some significant NVH especially in the 2K-2,200K RPM range. In general it just feels rough and very touchy in every gear. Perhaps I haven’t broken it in enough (~500 miles). Overall it’s a big improvement from stock, although based on all the positive reviews I expected a little bit more of a clean operation.

If you can get under your car, post some pics of the shifter. If you have grind where you didn't have one before, I'd look at the install. You can botch an install if you don't follow instructions. You could also call MGW. They have great customer service and can maybe help you diagnose it. That said, if you had synchro damage before, the shifter is not going to fix that. I have slight grind from 1st to 2nd if I get too aggressive with it before the trans fluid warms up, but its fine after it reaches operating termperature.

In my experience, it’s not a buttery smooth shift operation with the Gen II. But certainly helped me a ton with accurate shifting. Took a bit to get used to, but significantly improved after it was thoroughly broken in.

I honestly didn't like my Gen 2 until drove it a lot and got used to it. I was so used to sloppy shifting with the stock unit, the preciseness annoyed me. Give it some time. I did notice a little NVH from the console/shifter area but I haven't taken it apart to investigate, its not that bad.

If you have grinding then its most likely the install. I installed mine myself and have no grinding whatsoever, yes the shifts are notchy and sometimes clicks into place but no grinding.

Im gonna be honest, I borderline hate my car since I have installed the MGW. This thing has never felt right to me after multiple attempts to readjust. 5th gear gate has been the worse for me by far. its a VERY fine line to get into that gate.
I have 2nd gear lockout as well at the track. I have not duplicated it on the street, but at the track I certainly have on 2/3 of my passes so far.
Another thing I have found is I just cannot bang gears with this shifter. Its just too tight and notchy. Its just not what I expected

I installed mine myself, too. I don't have any extra grinding that wasn't there before, and there's also no extra NVH that I notice. I wasn't in love with the Gen 2 when I first installed it, either. As I've gotten used to it, I enjoy it now.

Yours is an '08. It's probably past due for a transmission fluid service. Give that a try. I think mine is coming up on needing new fluid, too. I'm starting to get some resistance going into gears. I'll probably have that done at the next oil change.

I have the Barton shifter and I occasionally have 2nd gear lockout. It is very embarrassing and random. I have new brake fluid and rebuilt McLeod RXT clutch, as well as the stainless steel clutch line. It is random when I miss, but it is usually under moderate to heavy acceleration and DAMN does it piss me off. I am almost 50 years old, and have been driving a stick for most of the almost 35 years I have been driving. I have missed more shifts in this car than all of the others combined probably several times over.

Mine is an 07. This was a complete shop build car by Brenspeed a few years ago. It only has a few thousand miles on the build since then. So I don't think it is fluid age. That being said, I dont think trans fluid age is really a thing to be honest.

If the lockout is similar to what the coyote mt82 problems are with 3rd gear lockout its not the shifter, its the clutch causing the issue. I definitely had 2nd gear lockout when I first got the car. I replaced the clutch and the shifter at the same time so I cant say its totally the clutch but after replacing both I haven't missed a gear or gotten locked out of one since.

Ditto. Its the clutch. Plenty of other cars have this problem as well and usually fixed with a better clutch. My Evo did the same shit and drove me bonkers until I put a twin in it

Just went through the same crap. Replaced Oem shifter with mgs gen 1, shifting was notchy but passable, after upgrading blower to vmp 2.3 I blew clutch had s McLeod txt installed by a shop I thought knew what they were doing..shifting got worse and worse wad so bad I had to smash it into reverse..ok so I added a gen 2 mgw shifter, shifter brtter but still notchy and still difficult to get into reverse..the installer that did the new shifter said the clutch wad dragging and had zero space from the floor
. I almost had to put my foot through the f
Poor to get it into reverse and other shifts were somewhat notchy...so ordered another txt and had him install clutch, release bearing and braided clutch line. Car is awesome now, shifts like a knife through butter and click right into reverse. I talked to Billy at McLeod and he said they had heard of this type of problem with a bad install.. so all in all two shifters two clutches and a pile of money and she's better than new.. believe me when i say the problem was with the clutch install.
