Maybe the crazy guy didn't understand English. I've watched enough MSNBC and CNN to know that they should have called out 'Drop the knife' in Spanish and several other languages as well. And, if that didn't work then of course they could have simply shot the knife out of his hand.

Just kidding. Amazing restraint by the cops. Good riddance.

I don’t care if Swahili is your language, uniformed police officers with guns drawn and pointed at you is the universal language to stop your ****ery.

We have the 30ft rule here
I hate Monday morning qb’ing other officers but yea there comes a point you draw that line and if he crosses it, that’s on him.
Walking backwards is no bueno. One slip or trip and that guy woulda been on him in seconds.

As addressed. Knife = gun every time. at least one gun on suspect if someone else is trying less lethal. But never just a taser

Innerwebs is too crappy to see the video.

Basic items needed to justify deadly force:
Means: knife
Opportunity: proximity
Intent: he was advancing.

I’m just getting those from your comments.

No, you don’t need to wait for him to charge. You can hold your ground and if he’s advancing, that’s on him.

It’s prudent to use some discretion and take a few steps back (if safe) but that’s not a rule/policy/how we’re trained.

You were probably yelling at the video when you finally watched. Ugh

At 2.25 he fired 9 shots and he's still walking. Did he miss or not enough stopping power?

Unless it’s eye box or central nervous hits pistol rounds don’t provide the kind of trauma to put someone down quick and hopped up on drugs must be even worse. Another good strategy is aim for pelvic girdle so they can’t walk or patrol rifle with 5.56

This, had to wait for him to charge or put the general public in danger.
This!! They gave him every opportunity to drop the knife and surrender. When they did open fire, it was with lethal force and they didn't expect him to charge again. The first officer had no ammo in his gun at that point (I didn't see him reload) so IMO if there was any fault it was with another officer not firing when the perp charged the second time. The knife at that point fell to the ground but he was still intent on attacking the officer. Thankfully the officer didn't appear to be hurt. A lot happened in that 2 1/2 minute encounter.

An officer's job ain't easy. But it IS dangerous. Round the clock dangerous.

We don't know how many rounds actually hit him, and where they entered his body. None appeared to be head shots, so if he was high on drugs he was able to recover and charge. More than likely the second round of shots included one or more head shots.

Seemed to me like the cop didnt want to kill him based out of fear of having to kill someone, maybe more so than being afraid of backlash?

Whether drugs or mental illness, that was suicide. Cops were super patient and tried everything they could do not to kill him. Damn shame for everyone.

I had an instructor who used to say, “The human body is easy to kill, but it’s hard to kill quickly”. That’s a pretty true statement

He wasn't out of ammo. He just really didn't want to kill the guy and since the guy dropped the knife he wanted his partner to tase him. They were both just too indecisive.

IMO you see here an example of why body cameras are both good and bad. Good because they leave no doubt that the officers did everything they could to avoid using deadly force. Bad, because I can't help think that the reason they waited so long (and allowed this guy to get entirely too close) was they knew that their video would be picked apart with a fine toothed comb.

Glad the officers are ok. As for the knife welding idiot, well **** him.

It is a sad world that we live in. The officers had to plead over and over again while waiting to be attacked before opening fire.
