Wow! I sprayed pesticide in the front and back yard to get rid of spiders hanging from the gutters and above doors and it looks like it worked.

I wish I could get paid as a hip-shot reporter. That's a female Argiope (aurantia I believe), not "Banana spiders." "Banana Spider" is a catch-all name for everything from garden-variety spiders to Brazilian wanderers.

Fun fact, those spiders are so tame, you can gently pick them up out of their web and they won't bite you. Just don't pinch or constrict them. The round Neoscona orb weavers are more likely to bite.

So what I'd like to know is what happened to the spider after it was sucked dry? Did the rest of the spider family show up to feast after mom/dad got first dibs? :confused:o_O:eek:

If I find one in my yard this year, I'll snag a vid and post it. Last year was insane for spiders around here. We had 5 or 6 large argiopes in our front yard alone- this year I haven't seen any large ones. I accidentally knocked one out of its web last year while trimming a large butterfly bush- picked her up and let her back into her web. I'll admit, I was nervous as hell. Since then, I don't mind handling argiopes if I need to (preferably with gloves!).

Neosconas are no-gos. They are aggressive little bastards and love to hang out between our crepe myrtles for when I'm mowing.

Here's a vid of a guy (not me) explaining how to pick up argiopes properly:

I've witnessed it.

I've also messed with banana spiders. They will crawl on your hand, check you out, and crawl back onto their web.

I had one at my old house that stayed by the back door. I also had a pair of praying mantises inside.

I never had a bug problem.

Friend bought 50 acres and we went and marked the perimeter. Found a couple deer stands and a stone bridge which was cool. It's swampy land on the river here in South Carolina. Came across this little guy and took his mug. Was on a 5 Gallon deer feeder. No camel spider but they can get big.

When they bite? What does it feel like? Bee or hornet sting?

I have never been bitten by an argiope, but I have read that it is not as bad as a bee/wasp sting. Most spider bites go unnoticed. Hell, I got stung/bit multiple times by something nasty a few weekends ago (high likelihood of a scorpion based on the effect it had) and I didn't even notice until I took a shower that night.

A small tarantula with visible fangs is about as bad as a small bee/wasp sting. A full-grown red-tail boa bite is about like getting slapped with a grill brush and shoved in the process. I know that one for damn sure haha.

Honestly, getting attacked by a cat is far worse than any exotic pet/creature that has ever bitten/stung me.
