For those who don't know I bought my uncles 03 Redfire Cobra back on 05/06/19. Since then I've been prepping the car and replacing several items (alternator ugh) to get it ready and this past weekend I attended my first HDPE event at MSR Houston.

My uncle had bought the cobra new in 1/15/03 and the car currently has 11,900 miles. The car is a dedicated road racing track car and has over 9k of it's miles literally racing around on a road course. He retired this year and sold the car to me where I will now continue to HDPE the car just as he done. Since I am a novice I had to run street tires which the car did not like since it's always ran Toyo's RR/RA1 or Hoosier R6/7 it's entire life

The event went well but I determined that 1. I am very slow and 2. the car really needs a good driver mod lol. My lap times toward the end was right at 2:10 which is about 20 seconds off the pace of a much less modded mustang with competent driver. I also had a mishap during the event where the trans got locked in 3rd (broken synchro keyway) so I pulled the trans this past tuesday and I'm in the process of a stage 2 rebuild.

I'll be signing up for the next event in November and plan to hit about 8-10 events a year. The car is street legal and registered for Texas but in 4 months of ownership I only put 125 miles on the car. It's street use will be limited and I have a trailer which I plan to transport the car to the road track.

It's legacy lives on.

Awesome! 9k of hard driving :)

The whipple was put on around 8k miles and the motor was taken down to shortblock for inspection by ford mechanics and determined the wear as minimal. I just compression tested the motor and was 175-185. All new timing assembly, oil pump, gaskets and arp head studs were installed at that time.

Ready for another 10k miles of hard driving!

Was there a reason for the tear down or just for peace of mind?

It was just the peace of mind. My uncle felt that adding the whipple and 100+ more horsepower that the head studs was necessary and figured the constant rpm abuse took it's toll on the timing assembly. Basically for every 1k miles of road racing they say puts 10k miles of wear on your engine. When the ford mechanic tore the engine down the parts still looked brand new. He went ahead and had them change the parts to new just because he was already committed to doing so.

Looks like fun. Some seat time will definitely help you

I would definately hope so because I drove that car pathetic. I'm still learning it's capabilities plus my own. My uncle however would of driven that thing to a low 1:40 for sure. Basically I have about a solid 20 seconds of improvement that the car can handle if I can just get more seat time and learn.

It'll come in time. My uncle already told me to be patient because he said it would take about 40 events before I can get close to where he was at. This is about 4 years and I'm sure I'll always get a bit better even 10 years from now.
