I'm sorry I'm about to rant and I love media and how our job market is a great whole (BS) sorry I lied, but how is it we profit as an economy on things like the NFL where people complain about scale wages, hold outs and get justification and paid out provided performance, yet the working man in every industry cannot pull the terms finically?

I'm wondering if all of sports franchises has brain ****ed us or become delusional to a water cooler idea or are we just minions running and pulling and pushing buttons.

The NFL can pay players because they generate enough revenue and create enough jobs to more than justify their salaries. It's not rocket science.

Nah, NFL isnt going anywhere.

Now, what Im about to say doesnt justify childish or stupid behavior. It is however the truth:

The level of professional play that the NFL operates is head and shoulders higher than the capabilities and athleticism of the average male. There are college football standouts that simply cannot play at the pro level. We see it time and again with 1st and second round draft busts. My beloved Chicago Bears experienced this with our former 1st round pick Kevin White. Played 16 games as a pro for us over 3 or 4 seasons and was unceremoniously released. He was a 7th overall pick. He was cut the preseason from the Arizona Cardinals and by all accounts is finished in the league.

So, with that in mind its fair to say that there are a very, VERY select few among us capable of playing at the NFL level. Even fewer are the players that are truly professional elite. When they think that they are getting underpaid by over performing their contract, thats where the holdout mentality comes from.

I think its stupid personally. You signed a negotiated contract for your service. IF you feel you deserve more money for your talent, then save it for the next contract negotiation.

I watch sports, mostly a NHL fan. But I always believed that doctors, nurses, military, law enforcement, EMT, and people taking care of the elderly and mentally challenged should be getting paid the most.

If professional sports stadiums wouldn't sell out and be top rated viewer's on the television athletes wouldn't make so much.

Change my mind...

I'm in one of the professions you mention above and have moved up so am paid well. That being said I also played football at the college level and have known several people who made it to the NFL. Their ability was so far ahead of everyone else's they were amongst a tiny percentage of people in the world who could do what they did. In the professions above I agree society should place value on them and they should be compensated fairly but there are far more people with the talent and capability to perform at a working level as a paramedic or nurse than as an NFL linebacker which explains the compensation difference.

Anyone can be a doctor nurse soldier cop firefighter teacher. Very very few can run 4.2 and catch or throw 98 with movement.

I want to know why athletes are always taking the heat for their salaries and nobody ever questions the salaries of the Hollywood freaks. At least athletes are actually incredibly talented and put their bodies on the line every day.

Come on, everyone knows celebs sell their soul for fame.

Let me try to simplify this for you:

Take what you do and think about the number of people that can do your job. Now think about the number of people that can do what Aaron Rodgers, DeShaun Watson or Tom Brady can do. There are probably 10,000 on Earth that can match them....maybe.

Additionally, if you are truly exceptional at what you do, then you can set your terms. If you have to fall in line with the market it is because you are AVERAGE. You just need to accept that you are another face in the crowd. Need proof? Look up Mo's Speed Shop. There are tons of speed shops, but these guys set the bar, and that allows them to charge more or simply turn away work with no damage to their brand.

It's an $15 billion industry.

The talent of the players are a big part of the reason it has blown up and why sponsors/TV contracts pay what they do.

They deserve a piece of that pie, and now it means that some QB can get a 150mil contract for throwing a ball.

Is it fair, relative to everyday people? Nope. But too bad.

I have no issue with players getting paid, or asking to get paid.
They are the cream of the crop out of thousands and thousands who play football.

Exactly. Additionally, they can get dropped at any time for any reason, or no reason at all. These guys suffer from injuries and pain that we will never know about.

I spent my hard earned money this past weekend to watch a losing team with no postseason chances play baseball. Tickets were gifted, but I spent plenty on parking, beer for me, and food for the kid. Why? Because it's entertainment and puts a smile on my boys face.

(Professional) Athletes get paid because we choose to watch them play. Them being on the field (or court) generates more jobs downstream than my job ever will and nobody is willing to pay $100 to watch me do mine. I love Capitalism and free markets.

Go Reds. Go Pack Go.
