Now the question you are wondering. Do you need to shave the pads?

It's closer than the ATS brembos on the 13" rotor, but yes, the pads overhang by about 4mm.

The slot the rotor rides in does have some room to spare. My thought it if I were to machine up a set of inserts that drop the caliper down maybe 2-3MM, it would still clear and require only minimal shaving of the pad to really work..1-2MM tops.

As for rim clearance? I don't have an 18" rim to try. Best I can do is a approx. distance from center of hub to edge of caliper. Appears to be just under 8". So 16" or so inside the barrel. Anyone with an 18" rim want to measure the barrel clearance they have? Can these fit under 18's or do you need 19's?

That's it for now. Only so far I can take this project. My car is a Fox body, and I run 17" wheels. I fear if I stuck these 14" Brembos on my car, it would either lock the fronts up with moderate braking way too easily, or do a cartwheel. I also have no intention of going to 18's.

But I don't mind messing around a bit more with this. I'm in the middle of machining my revised inserts for the ATS brembos to lower the caliper down slightly, but I can try those in this XTS caliper to see what the magic number is to drop it down and potentially not need to shave the pads. I also don't know if these will clear 18's.

I'd really like to see someone take this all the way and get it functional on a car. Really not much different than the ATS brembo swap

But, I paid $90 for the calipers, and $70 for one rotor. So $230 for the brakes/rotors. I would likely mill the calipers down the 0.075" so really it's just the cost of my time for machining the inserts.

At this time I am not making them. I've been doing these by hand....not on a CNC. You guys wouldn't want to pay what I would charge.

More info...because you can’t ever have enough data

Cobra 13” rotor: 19.0 pounds
Gt500 14” rotor: 24.8 pounds

Factory cobra Caliper : 8.3 pounds
Ats brembo: 10.8 pounds
XTS brembo: 12.6 pounds

All above are with pads and hardware

I’ll probably end up modifying the XTS brembos to fit after I get my ATS setup where I want it. I don’t have wheels big enough to run the 14” brakes though. Damn shame

Back to the ATS stuff. I got around to machining a new set of inserts to try. These are offset the 1mm and then relocate the caliper downwards 3mm towards the hub. That's about as close as I felt comfortable moving it. I probably could have squeaked out a 3.5mm drop, but it doesn't make a difference in the long run'

And it fits. Everything bolts up and bolted on cleanly to a '98 Cobra wheel.

IMG_6418.JPG

Now, I did try some other wheels. I tried a set of 94-97 Cobra wheels, a 99/01 Cobra wheel and an 01-04 bullitt wheel. All the wheels had clearance issues with the spokes. The face of the caliper hit the spoke. But the 3mm drop did clear the barrels. You would just need a spacer with these wheels, except the 98 Cobra wheel.

Miles of spoke clearance

How close is it to the barrel? 1mm clearance..maybe
IMG_6424.JPG

But, its a fixed caliper so it won't move. I feel comfortable running this. 18" wheels would be optimal, and you just need to pay attention to the front face clearance.

As for the pads. Bottom clearance is fine. You are right on the edge, but safe to run without running off the swept face or needing to shave the pads. As for top clearance? There's maybe 2-3mm of pad that needs to be shaved off. Oh well.

SO basically..one caliper done. I'll machine up another pair of inserts for the other caliper, and then machine the face and install the inserts. Then time to paint the caliper.

I plan on test fitting the next pair of inserts in the XTS caliper with gt500 rotor. I feel like i'm in the home stretch with the ATS brembos so I want to play around with the XTS stuff as well. I'm curious how the 3mm drop inserts will sit on the gt500 rotor.

That is exactly how my inserts are. I’ll have to see how the pads look after a few thousand miles, I’m running the pads as they come out of the box.

Did you try the other wheels that had clearance to spoke issues with .075 extra space?

I did not try it with the spacer but 0.075” isn’t enough. I machined the flange on my calipers so I’m not using the rotor spacer. Needed maybe 1/2” spacer to push the rim out far enough to clear the spokes. It wasn’t close at all.

I knew the 98cobra rim had the best spike clearance as that’s what is equipped as a spare in the 00R.

I plan on upgrading to aftermarket 18s at some point, but ideally don’t want to run a spacer.

How much farther do the caliper protrude toward the spokes than the stock Cobra calipers? I have a set of BBS wheels that should clear but there isn't much room.

I’ll see if I can get a measurement off the face of the rotor next time I mount them up

Is the gt500 rotor 14" or 15". I was going with the ats brembo's but now I want the xts brembo's, were you able to make this work

14” rotor. That was a typo

I took it as far as I can go. I don’t have wheels that will clear them so I haven’t mounted them. No idea if 18” or 19” wheels are needed.

But basically it’s virtually the same install as the ATS brembos. But as far as I know nobody has yet fully mounted a set and driven on it. It’s possible I may have been the first person to suggest it even is possible.

There’s some XTS brembos on EBay for $50/shipped each. Search “XTS J64 brembo”. They are cheap, as I paid $90/shipped for mine.

No idea what brake bias would be. Might need some rear brake upgrades

Probably my last update on the ATS/13” stuff.

In dropping the Caliper down 3mm I actually had some contact with spindle to body of Caliper. Did some minor machining yo remove the spot that hit.

Now I can see how the pad sits. Very little overhang.

At the bottom, the pad slightly overhangs the “valley” of a 99-04 cobra rotor. I’ll have to try a different casting to see if there is contact

Up top...barely Any overhang. This is looking down the rotors edge. Pad is on top near the clip

And plenty of space. Ideally, I’d machine a gt500 14 x1.25” rotor down to 13.3” and run it. But that’s getting too custom.

I’ll play with the 14” stuff next

I just stumbled upon this thread and several others on the ATS and XTS calipers. @Mustang5L5, I have to commend you for your time and expirimentation on these fitments to our cars, some excellent info in here! I'm following this to see where you get with XTS / 14" setup. Would love to get something like that on my 04 cobra. I've always hated the look of the unswept area on my front rotors...and well the PBR's just don't even look right in there IMO.

I have 18" CCW SP500 cut in 03/04 Cobra spec on my car. I'll take one off and measure when time permits.
