Dude the vast majority of Walmart is american made and american copied. They buy low price bulk and sell it low. Walmart has the lowest margin of any store to keep the prices down and pays the lowest to keep them down also. Target pays 13$ a hour and Walmart 10$ a hour for the same job. Walmart hires only part time now and maxes out at 32hrs a week to avoid paying for insurance. When I worked there we all got hired on Full-time at 40+ hour weeks.
Sam's Club was the same way with hours back when I was in HS. Man, Ive never seen so many people freak out over a timepunch in my life.

Its gotten worse. I passed up 2 job offers because they are cutting people and adding responsibility to others. I was offered management training because of my experience and passed on it. Some headaches aren’t worth the money

They raised the pay scale of employees so they have to pass the costs off onto someone.

Back when I worked there we had talks of a union and they promptly found reasons to fire the ones who started the talks.

True, they did raise pay, but they also cut labor across the board to off set that.

I believe Walmart made sure to fire them. That hate unions.

Oh I had to sit through training about how Unions were bad and that Wal-Mart was not going to play that shit. They fired a tons of people for “other reasons”, but we knew what the deal was. My store had rumors start and they were promptly squashed. I got asked if I was interested and said “nope” and went on with my day. Later that week was when heads rolled.

When I interviewed 2 days ago the manager told me they did away with overnight stocking and everything is done in the day time now.

Whats crazy is that I remember how anal management was about any stock on the floor past an hour to go before open. That they are now ok stocking during the day is quite the 180 from what I remember.

The cost of goods constantly going up is due to a large number of factors.

Unions are too expensive because invariably, there's a non-union outfit that can do the same job, with equal or better quality, for less cost. The only reason they get any work is because of their extortion tactics.

Whats your definition of too expensive?

If they were indeed too expensive why are there still so many around. Especially in the norcal bay area?

Pretty sure I answered both those questions already.

If your labor force holds your company and production hostage rather consistently, and let's be real- UAW protests are nothing new - there's an inherent cost to that.

I would be shocked if the protests don't end up costing GM money. Both in production, and in UAW contracts.

GM is losing about 82 million a day. It’s already cost them over 1 Billion dollars.

As you can see it is costing GM money. Right now no one is winning. Get back to the negotiating table.

Ouch.

Then union labor is way more expensive. Surprised GM hasn't jumped ship completely to a new state with no union.

It's not quite that simple. I'm surprised they haven't cut the benefits they've been paying for and threatened to start posting jobs for anyone who doesn't show up to work on Mon. Now that would make for an interesting news cycle.

Scabs. That said the first thing GM offered before strike didn’t seem like a bad deal to me. These people must have savings no way they can live off $250 a week.

You answered neither.

Whats your definition of too expensive?

I'll quote myself to explain.

Unions are too expensive because invariably, there's a non-union outfit that can do the same job, with equal or better quality, for less cost.

Too expensive is any amount of cost above others who provide the same service at the same quality, without providing additional value. I don't care what the magnitude of the additional cost is, whether $.01, or $1M.

If they were indeed too expensive why are there still so many around. Especially in the norcal bay area?

I'll quote myself again.

The only reason they get any work is because of their extortion tactics.

So yeah, I answered both. It just required some thought to see it.

I would image there'd be violence as soon as scabs started to approach the picket line.

I’m wondering how long this will go supposedly they have an 80 day supply of vehicles. Where I work we’re a tier 2 supplier to GM. We’ve slowed down but are steady with other products for Chrysler, Toyota, and Ford as well as aftermarket. I’m sure we will be busy as all get out when they start back to work.

If you don't mind answering, what does your company make?
