I found a 2017 GT350 at my local dealership for sale, 16K miles for $41k. I knew there had to be a catch, so I went to see it. Turns out it is a Ford buyback car.

Does anyone have resources to find out the issues for the buyback? I am waiting on the dealer itself to give me any information, but I want to cover all my bases before going any further.

VIN is 1FA6P8JZ1H5520052.

Thank you Sir!!!

ANy advice on this issue and if I should stay away for any reason? I drove the car today but since this is the first one I have driven, I have nothing to compare it to. I didn't notice any load rattling noises, but I think I may need to pay more attention if I go back tomorrow.

I'd just listen to it at start up.

Being a guy that just repaired frame fails on mine, I'd have no quams about buying a buyback where the price reflect proper repairs.

Listen to cold first start like 13cobra suggests and if it rattles, make them diagnose it. I'd request they provide the cylinder compression check report, lots of problems w/cylinders 4 and 8... You can also ask for the number of ignition cycles and compare that to the mileage and if the #'s don't jive, assume it was tuned and walk away.

If it's all good, I think you have a good negotiating position on this one to work the price to 39k including 8-year 100k mi. Ford ESP warranty or CPO.

They all gonna depreciate, starting in the 30's for a '17 with 8 year premium warranty seems like a smoking deal.

The Ford dealer says the only warranty is whatever remains of the 3/36,000. Their $41K price is "not negotiable internet pricing". Im sure if I said no, they would come down a little bit, but I don't think they would come down to $39K + an extended warranty.

Can you give me an example of ignition cycles vs mileage - I've never heard of that.

Ignition cycles are reset when the computer is flashed, so if you see a number like 100, then it implies someone recently flashed the FW. This is a metric Ford uses to refuse to warranty engines and useful to know if you're buying used. It's not exhaustive proof of tune, b/c Ford may have flashed it in process of some repair, but if someone tunes the car and it needs to go back to ford, they will usually restore the factory settings and others will remove a tune before they sell a car...

I'm a optimist on the deal, I would waffle on the perceived risk of a buyback car and let them use the extended warranty to resolve the concern. The value is:

Ford ESP Plans

The GT350 is expensive to cover and you're probably advantaged in that the floor manager does not usually deal with the warranty pricing and likely he will assume his cost is lower than it is when you bring it up. If he checks, or when you're in Finance, it will be more than expected, but not that bad... Fun to play with the knobs.

I would be happy with 8yr/60k warranty, and they do transfer so it makes your car easier to sell p2p someday too. Even though I put in Headers, CF driveshaft, MGW Shifter, and Vorshlag Camber Plates, I'm gonna buy the extracare plan since I don't need emissions coverage and I'd feel good everything else is covered and hope if I had a motor issue I would not be denied. It's why I never tuned mine.

The dealer gets a spiff and commission for selling the warranty and it might be a more palatable way for them to create a winwin...

Based on other people’s experiences that I read about I am surprised they let the dealer dive into the motor like that. Their typical mode seems to be replace the entire engine

Regardless, st least you would know what you have and that is a motor with some of the known weak points addressed.

If an extended warranty is available I would get it just make sure it qualifies

Good luck!

Congrats.
Based on that report (OASIS report?), why did they do a buy back?
Either way, hope she’s good to you.

Congrats and good luck OP!

Many of these cars are getting new engines as mentioned on Youtube and the other Mustang forum.
Good call on the extended warranty. Is it a full powertrain warranty?
