Ported TVS and SMOG

Hey there,

Looking at buying a ported 2.3L Eaton TVS for my 12’ GT500. Wondering if anyone knows if this will affect the SMOG of my vehicle in CA. Obviously I’ll have to return the tune to “stock” before having it smogged. Since the blower came stock on the 13/14 I wouldn’t think it wouldn’t be an issue with the porting since I believe only an OBII reading is done?

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Is it just porting? Or was the EGR stuff removed?
If nothing was changed with emissions equipment, and no lights on it should not be an issue.

My understanding is that if it wasn't certified in that configuration, or has an executive order, it would be considered a violation. It would probably take someone with some knowledge of these cars to be able to tell, but superchargers are not that difficult to swap if you wanted to pass emissions with the OEM blower. I believe the Ford Racing TVS had an E.O., but it would have come with a specific tune and certified for specific models (probably 07-09). These have been out of production for years. Slapping a TVS on your car really needs a tune too, which would have to be certified also.

I agree with Catmonkey on that respect, but I really doubt the inspection station is gonna know it’s from a diff year car. It’s an OEM Ford part. I don’t think you will get flack there.

Being from California, i would say stick with a Ford racing TVS and have that ported. It was smog legal for 07-12 cars. Has a E.O number. Im not sure if there is an E.O number for the 13/14 GT500 tvs.

Other option is go with the whipple kit for smog.

Why would the 13/14 not be emission approved other than it being in a diff model year?

Because it was never tested and certified to meet emissions. Ca can be tough. Without the EO it can fail visual.

It won’t pass visual to a smog tech with half a brain.

My bet is 90% of them wouldn’t notice.

The trinity blower is a damn good upgrade on 07-12 cars.

As long as it either has stock tune, or a custom tune that has rear o2s turned on so you pass readiness codes, it doesn't matter what blower you have. The blower just has to look stock to pass visual. Your computer doesn't know which blower is on the car. It will run just fine . T he smog guy isn't going to be revving your motor like a maniac, you can drive it to him. He just plugs into obd port to see if readiness codes are good, and that's it.

So you are saying 13/14 cars cannot pass emissions in Nazifornia?

Sorry if that sounds dumb, but I am trying to understand the logic since it is an OEM piece.
Also to the point of the 5.8 stamp on it, if they even pointed it out which is doubtful, couldnt you just tell them your original blower went bad so you swapped another OEM piece on instead of aftermarket to comply with smog regulations?

I think alot of this is overthinking though. OP can just try to smog the car and if it fails figure out his next steps.
Without living in Nazifornia, my logic tells me make sure all your sensors are ready and no cels or emissions stuff removed and it "should" pass

NO, he's saying a 13-14 Trinity blower or any other non-E.O. certified TVS on an 07-12 cannot pass emissions in CA. The TVS was certified on a 5.8 and will only qualify as OEM on 13-14. Replacing the TVS on a 13-14 with a 2.3 liter VMP blower would be in violation. No argument here that it's stupid, but consider the source.

Because the 13/14 TVS was not factory on any 07-12 and was not given an EO number it could possibly fail visual. The OP lives in SF according to his profile. He will have a hard time passing there.

If Ford racing had provided and aftermarket kit for the 13/14 TVS to be used on the 07-12 gt500 then everything would of been fine.

Also if you fail in Ca your more than likely gonna get ref these days.

They do offer that kit as an aftermarket kit to be used on the 07-12. I have that exact kit from the FRPP catalog on my car.

That supercharger "kit" was only offered as "competition only" and was not 50 state legal. Ford does make 50 state legal parts, but all engine components will come with a tune that has been certified by C.A.R.B. Ford spends a lot of money getting something C.A.R.B certified and they currently offer nothing for the 07-14 GT500. Here's the current list of emission compliant parts. Here's their statement on emission compliance.

FRPP's Whipple kit was the only one certified for the 11-12. The TVS was only certified on the 2007-2010. You can look these up on the C.A.R.B. website.
