I try not to go to stores, especially this time of year, but I had to run to Target to get a couple things. I observed 2 things that just made me Grinchy. What are your thoughts?

1. Dogs in stores: I’m a dog lover, but I’m walking down an aisle and this bulldog dashed out into the aisle from behind a display and startles the shit outta me. Owner had it leashed and it wasn’t coming for me, but jumped out and I wasn’t expecting it. It had no vest to indicate it was a service dog and it looked kinda scruffy. Owner didn’t even acknowledge that it startled me. Is it me or are people taking liberties with taking their animals everywhere? I swear I’ll probably see one at church tomorrow!

2. Going through self-check out and taking your good ol’ time. There were 4 self check out stations and one was out of order. Another was occupied by a woman who was working with an employee to clear up some sort of discrepancy. The other 2 were occupied by people who were talking on phones and jacking around instead of being efficient in checking out with such a huge line waiting. Am I the only one who sees self check out as a way for people to get in and out quickly?

I guess I’m a grump and a grinch because I was super annoyed. ‘Tis the season...I guess.

It's real easy to get frustrated with ignorance and how inconsiderate others can be, especially this time of year. Life's too short to let the little shit get to you though.

Get yourself a nice set of headphones and separate yourself from the world when you gotta go out (but still keep your wits about you)

Target is a weird store for pet policies. Most stores will either allow or disallow pets in their store. Target does not address pets in its policies leaving the subject open for interpretation or discretion with each store manager. Our local Target allows pets, however Ive never tried to take my dog in there......seems weird.

I feel for you on the self checkout....no your not a grinch since you went out for some “last minutes”!

An " emotional support animal" doesn't have a vest, and some service animals do not have a vest. They have a tag on their collar that says " Emotional Support Animal"

And if I'm correct.. in many states the manager cannot ask if an animal is a support animal or service animal by law.

They can ask if it's a service animal they're just not allowed to ask about the person's specific disability.

Most stores do not. Lowes, Home Depot, pet stores, and some others are the exceptions. We take our dogs in their occasionally.

You can print out any number of bs certificates for your dog online. As long as it looks "official" no one is going to challenge it. Store managers aren't exactly trained to know what a REAL certificate for a service dog looks like. That's if they even ask if it's a service dog, and if they even ask to see proof.

I've got no problem with well behaved dogs on a leash in stores like Lowes/Home Depot (unfinished concrete floors) but stores like Target, give me a break.

To help clear it up, there is no recognized data base for service animals. A service animal needs to be able to perform one or more physical acts to aid in a persons day to day life to be considered as such.

A service animal is also no required by law to wear any identification and a business can not ask why a person needs their service animal.

there is a lot more detail to it but it’s all outlined on the ADAs website.

neither are required to wear any markings unless outlined by local laws. Federally the ADA does not mandate it. ESA animals do not share the same rights as full service animals and as such they are only protected by the fair housing act, and can fly but do not have to be permitted in stores or restaurants.

service animals pretty much have open rights to go anywhere their owners do but can be removed for poor behavior.

This goes for most of the people in this world I seem to observe. Don’t you know it’s their work and you just live in it!
