Well things just got serious, the wife gave me the green light to buy a new "whatever" and I am seriously considering a Raptor with a very, very distant second being an SRT Durango. So I am looking for some opinions on Raptors vs SRTD's, and buying under 10k miles CPO vs new. Already sent a message to Nick and am waiting to hear back from him as well.

So how did I get permission you may ask? After losing a tire (Hakkapelliita R3, 40 profile) and the alignment on my E55 AMG from our wonderful NE Ohio roads my sports sedan, year round DD experiment has ended. It did great and I loved every second of it, I was even considering replacing it with an E63S 4matic later this year. In the end it came down to no matter what I got in the high HP sedan category I would never have enough sidewall for dealing with the roads up here in the winter as a DD. Who knew Mercedes made such great muscle cars lol. I called this an experiment because it was cheaper to find this out with the used AMG vs a new Hellcat which was what I almost bought last year. So thats how we got here.

Let me know what you all think, bonus points for the Raptor is that it will never fit in our garage so the Cobra will have a permanent spot for winter storage!!!

So, I have a Gen 1 Raptor.

The newer ones have better shocks, better acceleration, better tech*, lighter etc... The Gen 1 was nice and the Gen 2 is nicer. So, if you want a bigger vehicle that drives great, it's hard to go wrong with a Raptor, especially if your roads suck.

That being said, it's slower, stock vs stock, versus a SRT D and it's a lot bigger than a Durango. If you have to go to the city a lot, it's doable, but some parking garages are short and some spots are compact.
Quite the width difference between the two.

I've seen some posts on the raptor forums from guys coming from cars/smaller SUVs that bought a Raptor cause it was cool but it was just too bulky for them. And then some that love the new found space.

Durango also has a Vee8 and the Gen 2 sounds not as nice lol.

I prefer the UConnect over the Sync, but that's just personal preference.

Long term resale value has to go to the Gen 2. so, if it's a 2-3 year buy and replace then go with the Gen 2, unless the coil over Gen3/TRX knock it out of the park.

Even then, with 4 years of Gen 2 Raptors out there the Gen 1 market hasn't really taken a hit.

*Depending on what package you get.

Just picked up my 4th Raptor, they are great all around comfortable trucks.
My only complaint (eco boost) is it sounds absolutely awful.
I may have the exhaust from a Limited put on. Id go Raptor over the SRT, unless you need the SUV.

For me the proof's in the pudding. I've put more miles on my '17 Raptor than any other vehicle I own, and I have a few options when it comes to driving. The Raptor just does everything very well, and it's fun to drive.

Youre getting a new car because your benz' sidewall isnt enough?

Did i read this right?

Yup you read that right, this was never meant to be a permanent car for me. It was a test before I threw down on something much more expensive that I wouldnt be able to reliably drive through the winter.

My vote goes to the Raptor. It is a BLAST to drive! Plenty of POWER, more can be had if you want to throw a tune on it. Very plush ride on/off road. Handling on road can feel a bit squishy because of the compliant suspension and 35 inch tires, but who is using a 4X4 truck as a corner carver? Towing heavy with it will require a Weight Distributing hitch, but they are very capable haulers with the right set up.

Definitely go with the Raptor. I've lost all faith in the SRT line aside from the hellcats and the trackhawk. I had two bone stock srt8 jeeps that both dropped valves in the motor. There's issues with stock 6.4 hemi motors that Chrysler isn't disclosing.

CPO vs New...same story as always, you’re going to take a bigger hit on buying new. Although we are out of the ADM and into discount phase of the Gen2.

Long story short I might have to sell mine soon. However, I am contemplating selling some organs and a few other nefarious professions to keep it.

Watch out for the cam phaser issue...

Ive heard about that issue, no real good reading done on it yet as most of the threads I found about it turned into flame wars. Seems if you have an issue its real bad and reoccurring but no real indicator on frequency or prevention.

Love both Raptors, but the ecoboost is a negative for me. Really much prefer the BULLET PROOF 6.2L V8.

If you don’t mind chancing some warranty work on the eco motor, I’d say go for it.

Some South FL dealers are still on crack.

Had one trying to say MSRP was a good deal cause they used to sell them for 5-10k over.

ya it's funny how all over the place it is with some still trying to get an ADM, some at MSRP and some drastically under

I will give you some perspective that will hopefully help with your decision.

I have a 14 Raptor, a 15 Explorer Sport, and a 17 F350. I work in the marine industry, so I am either in the areas based in urban/city environments (NE - NY Harbor, Philly, Norfolk) or out in the middle of no where like Port Fourchon-LA, Venice-LA, Panama City FL, etc.

Driving the Raptor in urban environments that have parking garages, small parking spaces, narrow lanes of traffic is a pain in arse. Especially if you like to not have your mirrors ripped off, or doors dented. I drove my Raptor in Brooklyn for a couple of months, and will never drive that truck in those types of areas again. It translates into it taking 15 minutes getting somewhere, or 45 minutes because you cannot just whip around like you can in a smaller vehicle. I do not drive my F350 when I am in that area either. The Explorer is perfect because I can whip that thing in and out of lanes because of all the double parking. Also, parking in a normal or small parking garage isnt happening. In fact, some garages will not even let you come in.

So the point I am making is, if most of your travels involve being in urban/highly populated/space constrained areas, you will not enjoy driving your Raptor always worrying about what you will hit. Or some a-hole who drives a POS just flings their door open in the spot next to you, denting and scratching your door.

In fact, the ONLY reason I have the 15 Explorer is to drive in these types of areas without having to worry about damage.

Hope this helps.
