Running Octane Booster/93 issues?.....for people who run it

I am considering running 93+torco to get at least 100OCT. I will use either boostane or torco only. Tuner said no problem and they are big.

I know E85 would be better but that really limits how much I can drive the car and where I’m not ready to make that plunge.

Other than added cost and the annoyance of adding every fill up. I’ve seen people say it can turn spark plug colors or tops of pistons other than that is it bad for the motor? Or any issues with detonation or anything like that?

Thanks in advance. I did research before posting so just getting info from people who actually run it. I have an 11 all supporting mods with a VMP R

Do you really need to run it constantly? Can't you just run it when you are going to play hard or flip a 100 octane tune in?
I have run Octanium a few times and IMMEDIATELY on the first tank my plugs were VERY orange. It does the trick though, but I have not run it often due to that.
I hear you can get them without that chemical in, but it costs more. I forget what it is called off top of my head.
I also run 100LL from an airport once in awhile. Again I do not run it often due to lead deposits.

Yea that is what the tuner said as well but it is not 100% if that causes issues? I’d think long term it would right?

I don’t DD but if it nice out I’m driving it.

I ran torco for years before switching to E85. Does turn the plugs orange but never had an issue. I ran it on every fill, as you want a good consistent mix if you are really tuned for it. The saddle gas tank, is not the best for mixing fuels together.

So did you have to change your plugs more often or what? I already change them a good amount of times anyway but just curious.

Thanks for the input like I said tuner has a ton of people that has been running it for years and 0 issues on stock motor

I changed the plugs once a year, for routine maintenance. I switched to E85 in my GT500, but still use torco in some of my older high compression NA cars. I will take orange plugs over engine detonation any day.

You will find mixing is a pain in the ass. Honestly what will the extra timing give you? 20-30hp? At that point I rather run 93 and just turn it up when I am ready to race. You ain’t gonna notice the difference doing a single gear pull here and there
$20-25 extra per tank to not need it will get old IMHO
Now if you are like forever in race mode, sure I guess.

I should be able to make about 100 or so whp more (what I’m told) it’s giving me the ability to run a 10% lower

I think those expectations are quite high. Let us know how it goes though.
You are gonna be generating alot of heat with that thing full tilt. Just play safe

The saddle gas tank, is not the best for mixing fuels together.

This. Also, the problem with swapping tunes is that you never know the exact fuel composition going to the engine. Imagine you run 93 for a few months. When you decide to run 100, your fuel line from the tank to injector is still full of 93 only. So you’ll probably need to add the booster and run a full tank through on 93 tune just to be sure. And even once you’ve done that, without an agitator in the fuel tank I can’t imagine it’ll ever be 100% mixed. Sounds risky for the benefit.

My tuner always suggest running around on the mix for a few miles to let it mix a bit. Yea its always dicey mixing though. I mean it works. Ive done it without any detriment I am aware of, I just prefer not to have to do it.
So honestly I run 93 99.9% of the time. I only mix when I am running some big boys later that night and need a few extra HP to help me out.

@GT500_012308 is yours a 2010 or newer? If so it has a knock sensor, however primitive it may be, which would ease the mind a bit. Not sure I’d go this route if it’s not.
THIS!
I would just let knock sensors do their job. Thats what they are there for. Let it add and trim when it needs if you have them and add booster when you want to play and push the wick a little.

boostane-mixing-chart

BOOSTane Mixing Chart - BOOSTane Octane Engineering

I'm going to run 93 and shoot for 98. So approximately 5oz mixed with 16 gallons of fuel.

32 oz can should last 5-6 fill ups. Pretty good.

Curious why only these two? Have you tried and not liked any of the others?

I have only limited experience with additives, but I've stuck with Race Gas from day one. Today, I use Race Gas Ultra. Mixed with 91, it makes 110 octane....

@1 Alibi 2 , that is a whole diff price range of fuel there though. I know you can mix them to up the octane, but don't you need ALOT more of that to mix with 93 for same results?

Did you ever ask how they feel about Boostane or Octanium as well? All of them seem to work, but its most certainly a pain in the ass for non knock sensor cars. I try not to trust it too much and dump 100LL in when I want to make all the power .But even then I only dump 5 gallons when the car is empty and can only get a few runs in.

Was using VP Octanium as recommended by Lund for a year then found Torco unleaded and now VP-O also has unleaded. My data logs showed 1-2 degrees in timing increase from the higher octane in the tune. The ECU loves the extra VP-O over the 93 pump gas which likely balances out around 97-98 octane. With the additive the car literally JUMPS and I feel every bit of that in the performance on the butt dyno. Lund explained the difference as it was tune related ...ability to kick up timing with better fuel. Not sure if it's the tune specifics or just the ECU McLuvin the extra octane. No matter.
My mix is one 32ounce bottle for the first summer gas tank fill ....after burning off the winter gas. The around 1/4 tank I add 1/2 bottle . To me it's well worth the minimal effort at the pump and the extra $10 weekend cost which equals only a few hundred per season. My spark plugs are orange but two Mustang Race shops noted that means nothing except being an indicator of octane booster. On the VP-O the motor pulled 716rwhp / 680 tq thru 4.10 gears on a dynonometer and with same set up 10 days later pulled 658rwhp/ 596 on a Mustang Dyno.
This season I tried some fresh highway pulls on 93 pump gas at 60 degrees. It was the first summer tank of fresh fuel. Then I added a bottle of VP-O and ..WOW! 60 degrees made the car pull harder than 80+ degrees. But my research disclosed octane increase does NOT rely upon temps to make more power. My '13 LOVED the extra octane.
Bottom Line ? For my FBO Lund Tuned Set Up...Octane booster makes more power in any temps. I will be adding VP-O Unleaded or Torco every weekend...every season I own the car because it works. Orange shaded plugs mean nothing. But unless your using Iridiums which I still swap out every other season at 5-6K miles fresh NGK-7 V-Power plugs each season will be a regular investment.
My buddy has a Cobra kit car and mixes race gas. To me that's a PITA. Carrying a quart or 1/2 quart of VP-O or Torco Unleaded in my trunk duffle bag with a long tubed funnel is Easy-Peezy ! I've never done a 93 pump vs VP-O additive dyno comparison. That gets complicated. So instead I decided to honor my data logs and stay with a 1/2 bottle per 3/4 tank refill every summer weekend with room to play. I roll raced a Redeye (or Demon but not the HC logo) from 55mph last week.....the Shelby was out 1-1.5 cars twice ....I attribute that to each component of my set up which will always include VP-O or Torco ....I went home that day smiling :)->) !
