Can anyone point me in the direction of more info on the 07-09 gt500s?

What does the stock block handle?

Common mods?

Common issues?

What to look for when buying?

7-800hp on stock block assuming you limit RPM to 6500 max. The whole motor is forged and pretty strong, but the rods are the weakest link and they dont like RPM.

First round of bolt ons (intake, pulley, tune) is usually around $1500 and should give you 500-540whp. This will really wake the car up. I found my bone stock 07 terribly slow in stock form.

IMO, a 2.3 TVS is a must and the car will make 650whp on this blower without even trying, even on the stock exhaust manifolds.

No real issues that i can think of, im sure someone else can chime in there. Maybe notchy shifting when the trans is cold?

If/when i buy another 07-10 (iron block) GT500, ill be looking for one with HID headlights--which didnt start until 2008.

Stock block from what I have heard is about 750 hp

lca for sure, pulley cai and a tune

common issues? Too much fun?

clean car fax, try to know the owner ie a well known forum member selling their car.
If you don’t know the car or owner I suggest you by a low mileage, stock gt500

If you know or know of the owner and how he/she takes care of their car, than buying a slightly modded Gt 500 will save you bucko dollars

07 was the first year. I recommend the 08 or 09. Navigation, lighter crank pulley, revised clutch and updated tremic tranny, HID’s amongst other options that the 07 didn’t have.

As to the connecting rods, they are forged powdered metal, not forged steel. This is a cheap manufacturing process and while they're pretty durable for what they are, they're pretty marginal when you crank up the power levels. It's the Achilles heel of the GT500.

The first thing I always look at on a car is the tires. You can tell everything you need to know about how someone takes care of a car by the tires.

Are they a cheap no name brand? Probably means he cheaped out elsewhere. Avoid.

Are they worn out? It means he beat on the car and did not care to replace when needed. Likely holds true for rest of car. Avoid.

I know this is car buying 101 but thought I would mention it.

I wouldn't call these issues, maybe weak points of the gt500. They are certainly among the first mods to do.

Heatsoak, stock heat exchanger is really bad and will give you about 5 minutes before IAT2 shoot up and robs power. Wheel hop, this can be dealt with a set of control arms. Finally the shifter, its not bad per se but since its a big part of driving a manual car I would put this on top of my list of mods, go for MGW. Clutch, there is a tsb for it so check if its been done. If not, then consider a new clutch as the stock ones will last anywhere from 15-35K miles. Mine let go around 27K.

Other mods to consider, tires tires tires. For easy power an intake and a pulley will net you decent gains and wake the car up. Maybe lowering springs depending on you preferences but I found the gt500 to be too soft.

Yes, too much dive and squat and gets annoying and frustrating on spirited drives. I went with coilovers because I didn't want too much drop. And it turned out great since I started doing HPDE.

But, for someone who wants to DD their car the stock suspension is really great, for a bit more sportier feel any lowering springs will do just fine.

From the supplement book of the 07-09, front 194.7 lb/in rear 166.7lb/in.
Most of the lowering springs are under 300 lb/in while coilovers are over 300.
