Why would you get fired if youre travelling in the citt with your weapon in the vehicle?

Do you use employees vehicles during work?

No, I am in a shop. I work on the city fleet vehicles. I am not sure, I will have to look further into it, I just remember management talking about this a while back. A few years ago a supervisor was shot and killed by an employee, since then they have had these rules. A woman was fired recently for carrying her weapon in an office downtown, she had been receiving threats from her spouse and decided to protect herself. Someone happen to see it in her purse and she was canned.

Right.

So how will someone know your weapon is in your vehicle?

That is wild.. shes not on business premises and was fired because shes carrying at a different location?

Noone needs to know that you carry or have a ccw.

Dont already make yourself become a soft target.

I will only add one thing to everyone's advice because you have a little one. NEVER NEVER NEVER underestimate your child's abilities to find a way to get to and screw with something that has their curiosity. And anything they are forbidden from absolutely draws that curiosity. I went round and round with my oldest boy about the gun safe and what was in it. Long story short he figured out what keys where and was trying to get to the keys. Finally had it and went out side and mag dumped a watermelon with my .45. Kinda hated to go that far but guess what, to this day him and his stubborn ass brothers don't mess with daddys gun safe. I'm not saying do that to your kid because it scares the piss out of them, but please man...don't underestimate or drop your guard on what they will do or come up with. Be safe!

She was at her job on City property in one of the buildings downtown. We have administrative people that work downtown. If I do go through with this I will not say a word, someone is always willing to turn you in at work. I don't trust a single soul there when it comes to stuff like this.

Exactly correct, this is ours to a T. You tell them not to do something or touch something and that draws them to it. This is my biggest fear, I couldn't live with myself if something happened to them.

We have a secure hidden location where our long guns are locked in place, and we have three GunVault safes including one in the kitchen, all of them cable-locked in place. Yes, they're defeatable by somebody who wants into them, but kids aren't going to find easy access. When the handguns aren't on our persons, they're locked in the safes, but easily accessible in about 2 seconds if need be.

One other rule of handgun safety that *everyone* should know, is this: Just because you've removed the magazine does NOT mean the gun is unloaded. It likely still has a round in the chamber, and most guns will still fire with the magazine removed.

Go take a class at an outdoor range (less intimidating and quieter than indoor). Get comfortable then do a practical pistol type class. Get comfortable moving and shooting, reloading, and hitting moving targets.

The reason I suggest s practical pistol course/competition is twofold; 1) it makes you a better shooter and 2) they take safety to another level. 99% of firearm owners are a danger to themselves imo. I have never, and I'm not kidding, never met someone that doesn't compete that didn't either muzzle me or do something dangerous within seconds of pulling it out. Shooting with competitors has made me a lot safer and more importantly, able to recognize unsafe habits

Rule #1: The gun should always be treated as if it is loaded, cocked, and ready to shoot.

Rule #2: If you are not about to fire, keep your finger OFF the trigger! The safety on your weapon is NOT the switch or button on the weapon, the real safety of the weapon is your brain and your trigger finger. If you aren't shooting, your finger does not belong on the trigger!

Rule #3: Never hang out with people who are acting irresponsibly with a weapon. If you have a buddy and he wants to shoot your weapon, and is acting dumb, take it away from him. Better to lose a buddy than a life!

Find an NRA approved safety class. Always keep your booger hook off the bang switch. Never point it at anything you don't intend to kill, hold on.
Never point it at anything you don't intend to kill
And by that I mean even if you just cleared it yourself.
Practice,Practice,Practice.
Now my opinion may differ from others but when I carry I have one chambered. My home protection weapons are loaded and chambered and ready to go. I don't want to fiddle around in the night with locks or other devices that can/will malfunction.
But being that you have small children I would recommend locking it up during the day or some other arrangement.

A lot of good advice in here and no offense to anybody, but if you want to really learn the ins and outs, go join a forearms forum.

Think of it this way, if you were big into guns and not cars, would you ask you gun forum for the best info on a car?

1. Safety
2. Safety
3. Safety

"Treat every gun as if it's loaded. Never point the gun at anything you don't want to destroy. Never put your finger on the trigger unless you are ready to fire."

Some people overstate things to emphasize the element of danger in failing to act safely. Unfortunately, if you were to follow these rules you'd never be able to clean your gun, practice target acquisition, drawing from your holster and dry-firing at home. I get their intentions when they act like guns are super-duper deadly, but when properly cleared, they actually don't do anything but make clicking noises. If you are new to gun ownership and shooting, a lot of practice with a cleared gun is helpful and will help make your time and money more productive at the range.

Unfortunately the rules at my job do not allow weapons on the property, including the car. If I travel in the city with it in the car I could get fired. It kind of leaves me in a bad spot if I were to get a handgun. I am not sure if there are ways around that.

Check your state laws. In TX we passed a law that makes it illegal for employers to keep you from carrying in your vehicle to work (with a few exceptions).

Have you thought about a particular weapon? Caliber? I suggest when you are ready head to the biggest gun store in the are and simply handle all the major name brands. Personal opinion varies a good bit on the topic. For instance I HATE Glocks but only for the ergo of them. It's a personal opinion because many people love them and they are a very reliable weapon. You could go revolver but not the most popular handgun these days. I recommend a full size for the house but a compact for a carry if you get to that phase. My go to house weapon handgun is a H&K VP9. I'm left handed and it's one of the most left handed friendly handguns on the market. Also a huge Smith and Wesson M&P fanboy and own many. Sig makes some great weapons as well and I'll also always be a huge Beretta 92FS fanboy but that's due to my Military roots.

I will try and search to see if our state has done this. It would help because I am going into town 5 days a week. Luckily the protestor/rioters are saving there love for downtown.

I haven’t looked into the type, I would like something with a true safety on it and apparently Glocks don’t have that. I figured I would go and check them out, see how they feel in my hand.

Amen to that! Heck, our grandson when he was 5 years old completely took apart the whole front of my son's built in oven. He wanted to help dad because he knew it wasn't working like it should. ON HIS OWN he figured out how to do it. Needless to say, when his dad saw parts all over the floor when he got home from work he was livid. But then quickly forgave Josh because he knew he was only trying to help. Needless to say, it goes to show how smart and clever young kids can be. So with guns in the home, you can never be too safe! IMO, young children should NEVER see your guns.

If you are getting for home defense, shoot often. Do drills to replicate how you will be using it. It should be an extension of you.

This is a great one. I can’t stand it when people just toss around weapons like they are toys.

Also, I’d add this. Always clear a weapon that is handed to you. When you take one out of your safe to do anything, clear it. It’s a good habit to get into.
