So I just finished my live axle 8.8... new Ford factory 31 spline limited slip, strange axles and c clip elimnators, new 3.55 ring and pinion. Everything in it brand new. Do I need to break it on before I beat on it? I drive the car 500 miles a year and drive it like I stole it everytime so I really don't want to drive it around like a grandma to break it in.

Makes you wonder.

Every new car we got was driven like you stole it instantly on test drive.

Maybe a drive around the block to listen for any noises than have fun.

If I recall, I think you have to take it easy for a couple hundred miles especially with a new ring and pinion, then let it eat. At least that's what I did when I built mine.

^^Agreed. I just got done with an Eaton True-Trac and a 3.73 gear. Setting up the gears correctly is no joke. It took some work to get that pattern right. A lot of time and money invested so I thought it would be smart to be cautious. I'm taking it easy for 500 miles and it's tough. I ALWAYS want to put my foot through the floor. After 500 miles I will change the fluid and drive it like I stole it! Looks like you have some serious money in that axle. If you beat on it too soon the gears can overheat.

Tough shit, you have to break in a new diff/bearings. There's a procedure, go read up... I think randys ring and pinion has something on their website. Basically its something like go around the block, come back let it cool for an hour, then go a few miles, let it cool.... etc etc. If you just beat on it you'll overheat the gears and bearings

If your car really is driven that little the just run it for 15-20 minutes and let it cool. Then, for your situation, drive as your "normal" and change the oil out after about 6-7 heat cycles. You'll be ok.

Your break in will be pretty close to what's recommended for drag cars with fresh gears.

Never heard of this. Had 3 sets of gears in and out of my car. Shim it properly and let it eat.

Just rebuild the rear of my Ram 1500...the technique I followed was do a drive varying the speed and never topping 55...go for about 20-30 minutes. Let it cool. I let it sit overnight. Do that again 1 more time the next day and then just change the fluid around 500 miles and go.

No, there is no break in that's non-sense. There are no rings to seal. Went directly to the track and made numerous passes after installing mine. And I drove 2 hours each way to get there. Been in there for 2 years now with zero issues.
