A lot of misinformation in this thread. It’s best to consult a professional in your area. Here in Vegas, you gotta have one unless you are already psychotic and just looking for a straw to break the camel’s back before you go postal. It is a must.

I test the water weekly, throw in a few chlorine tabs when needed, I invested the $1300 in an energy efficient filter/pump, and we have a floor system instead of a vacuum/robot. Once in a while my water will be “off” and I gotta throw some chems in to fix it, but rarely.

This. They aren’t as bad to maintain as some people make them out to be, IMO. You spend 1/100th of the time maintaining your pool vs maintaining your yard. Shock it weekly, throw some chlorine tabs in the skimmer, and set the auto vacuum for an hour. The most time spent is opening and closing the pool. It’s take much more effort for me to put my boat in the water.

I have an inground pool. LOVED IT!!! I would be in it today if it were functional. I would have used it A TON this summer actually as I'm still on half furlough. Plus, water is GREAT muscle therapy after working out.
I hadn't opened it in maybe 15 years or more? I think it's got a crack in it. Actually, I know it does. lol It's a gunite pool. I think the liner pools are the best bet. At least that's what I heard.
GOOD LUCK!

Don't put one in if you have large oaks like I did. Virtually every afternoon in Jersey in the summer, was the washout that ripped large green leaves off the trees and deposited them on the pool bottom. Too big and numerous for auto cleaners.

I also spent a lot of time draining water out after those storms, only to forget and drain it down to the skimmer, then fill it back and forget that and overfilled. Rinse and repeat.

Anyway, the most fun I probably had with it was 4 wheelin in the hole, after I ripped it out.

We have large pines, so a similar issue. We either cut down trees or protect the pool from the other elements.

I just don't see the point here in NE. U get like maybe
3-4 months out of the year if ur lucky. And it really does
nothing to add value to ur house but will cost a boat load
to install and u have to maintain it.

People who complain about their pool/maintenance most likely don't have a clue how to take care of one, or know what equipment/chemicals to have.

I have a salt water pool and probably don't spend $100 on it the whole summer.

No need to ever go into a pool store, or pay to have anyone come to your house and maintain it.

Do some research here, this site will give you every bit of info on how to take care of a pool. Trouble Free Pool

Wife would like one, but ain't going to put one in at the current house, as I'll never regain the money spent putting it in, and I don't expect to be in this house by 2023. Rather just buy another house with a pool.

Down here, maintenance isn't too bad as long as you do basic shit. Stuff may break, but that just the territory that comes with owning a house.

I have a 16x32 in-ground. It was a in rough shape when I bought my house but I brought it all up to par and like most say it's not that bad to maintain once you get it up and running good. I open and close it myself. There again pretty easy todo if you have a shop vac. (Just have to fill lines with Antifreeze in the winter). It get easier once you've messed with it for a few years. Kids absolutly love it so it make it worth any little hassle. I would say cost me roughly $100/mo between power and chemical. I usually only run the pump about 10 hours a day....

If your family uses it, worth it, if not, they are a money pit. My family got in the pool maybe a 2-3 times a month. We had the Dolphin and all that, but if no one's using it, they're not worth the money, work, hassle, etc.

We are doing the plans to build our pool right now. Can't wait to have it done. But living in the Phoenix area, it's almost a must-have.

I’ll touch on winterizing since nobody has yet. It’s easy.
Northern IL, concrete walled vinyl pool, we close and open it every year. Drain it below the jets and skimmer unhook a couple of pipes by the filter/pump, blow them out with a shop vac, fill the pipes with RV anti freeze, blow that until it comes out of each jet, cap them all off, cover the pool, done.
People pay a lot to have them winterized for no reason, same as a boat. It’s gravy.

Finding a good pool guy is key. We had a cheap guy and the pool was meh. $80 a month iirc

He “retired” and we found a guy on yelp. $130 a month and the pool is always perfect. Tabs and chemicals included. Guy is awesome. Had him for about a year now. Very little extra ever needed.

When we bought the house we sprang for the $1k pump since our local utility company had a fat rebate. Electic is not bad. AC for the house is much much worse lol.

With the quarantine the pool had never been used so much. The kids are in it every day, some times twice in one day. My buddy said once his kids got older they stopped swimming but with our pool even the adults use it. Both grandmas come over to swim almost daily lol. The dogs love it too. Its getting used a lot! I hate public pools. With our own pool we can go in for an hour if we want and get out in time for dinner. No having to make a trip out of it.

The house cane with the pool. We looked for one that had one. Didnt want to dump another $50k+.

Even looking at moving to a new house we agreed it would need to have a pool, or we’d have to build one.

My ex had a huge above ground pool. I referred pool guy to her. He said no pool guy wants to work on them because theyre way too much work and the equipment sucks and most owners arent willing to upgrade the equipment. She wasnt willing to upgrade the equipment and it was a constant nightmare. She finally got rid of it.

My own pool guy had an AGP lol. He said the house didnt have one and too much $ to build one so he has AGP but he upgraded the equipment to in ground pool equipment. Still more work than an in ground though, per him.
