I really dont know why else they would have reduced the power. When testing i was reading it was making 475-500hp along with 525-550tq. I dought at that power level with all the tough components they put into it was unreliable at all.

So with that said what this be what they put in the Gen 3 raptor? Since this is the very tone down version of the 7.3 maybe Ford will put a HO version of the 7.3 like they did with the 3.5

If we get lucky enough to get the 7.3L in a raptor no dought would it get a power bump for sure. Would make no sense to be lower than what the current 3.5HO puts out.

Interesting, why lower it so much. The tq isnt bad but 130hp drop. You would think with how some of these vans are loaded to the max rating they would want as much hp/tq as possible and reliable.
Engine longevity is the main reason why powertrains are de-rated. Mostly its because they know that a far less amount of power/torque can get the job done for commercial applications.

Joe the commercial truck and equipment operator doesnt give a shit if his company purchased and owned F-650 that tows the backloader has 75% the power of a retail version of the engine. He also doesnt care that it takes longer to get going, he's getting paid.

But the fleet manager sure as hell likes the idea of an engine that will never be overworked while proding better fuel economy and lower potential repair costs.

Why would they put the 7.3L in the Raptor? That extra 88 lbs over the 3.5 is just too much, right?

Well, hopefully the aftermarket world embraces the 7.3L. Being an OHV and size due to OHV should help with swaps.

There was some hype on the 6.2L, being bored out possibly close to a 7.0L, make some good NA power etc...
Never happened outside of Livernois making the 6.6L and I think a custom cam for the 6.2L.

It's pretty bleak so far. There'a Whipple, MBRP cat back and that's about it so far.

Seems the new gen 3 5.0 makes big numbers and gets 95% of people where they want to be. Hard to justify putting R&D into a new platform that will only really be performance oriented in swaps. Doubt there are more than a hand full of F250 guys looking for cams and engine builds. IMHO kind of the problem with this and the 6.2, easier to just drop a 5.0 in with the PnP control pack and call it a day.

You want to avoid adding ANY extra weight over the front wheels so it is not nose heavy in any performance vehicle .

I'm sure you already knew that....

This is true for a modern Ford chassis, but swapping a 4.6/5.0 into almost any Ford chassis older than the Fox requires major customization. This 7.3 might be just the ticket for people with older Ford platforms that want modern Ford power.

Does that include all the ancillary hardware required to run the engine? The reason I ask, is I thought I saw a comparison between the 6.2 and the 3.5TT and the weights were very close when you include all the turbo related components. Could easily be misremembering though.

The EB def has a few extra pounds in the pipes and intercooler.

Thank You,

I see no reason why a 7.3 would not work great in a raptor as the heavier 6.2 worked great in a raptor!

Are you suggesting the 3.5 is very close in nose weight of the 7.3? Can’t be...

not at my post...

yup and they are simply trucks at their core, 7.3 would kick ass in the raptor and is still 50lbs less than the old 6.2. I laugh at the argument of them being referred to as performance vehicles as if they are road course track weapons and adding a little more weight on the nose would somehow upset the balance of a ****ing truck...
